Admittedly, I should probably note that people at work frequently inform me that *I* am nuts (I'm still hearing a surprising amount of, "OMG, you RIDE in this?" -- it's above 40 F, people! Jeez!), so I may not exactly be a reliable judge, here ;) Regarding the wind question: I guess I would probably not ride in winds high enough to warrant street closures, because I like living. We had a windstorm about a year and a half ago which brought down tons of trees; my roomie and I were dumb enough to go out and try walking in it, but after nearly being killed by oncoming plants, we went home. Tornadoes and flying forestry aside, though, I will ride in almost anything. Oh, and amen on the neoprene facemask. I bought one this year, and I'm trying to figure out how I ever rode in subzero weather without it. |
Since I have a longish commute, I'll take the train if the winds are 30 mph sustained with gusts over 50 mph. It's not so much riding into a headwind that I worry about as it is being blown into traffic (or blown down) by a sudden crosswind. I love riding and would hate to get an injury that prevented me from doing so simply because I took a stupid risk on a bad weather day.

I haven't met weather I don't ride in yet. I've been a full time commuter for about a year. So much so that I'm selling my truck soon.
|
It hasn't stopped me yet, but has gotten me to curse a few times.
That being said - when I ride with wind it is NEVER there on the morning ride. Then when its time to go home - BAM - headwind. |
Wind doesn't bother me too much, unless it's carrying something like sand or rain or ice. That can hurt a lot if the wind speed is high enough. Last time I did ride through such a rainstorm, I did take shelter, and my face was still hurting for 2 days.
Now riding with the wind, that's another question entirely. :D |

No.
I've been out in winds at 35mph gusting to 50+. You have to be careful. I wouldn't ride in a tornado, though. |
I'm reminded of this YouTube video I saw last night.

others things will hold me back but not wind. no sure ha makes sense though. one morning we had a torrential rain storm and high wind advisories, etc. I was crossing route 30 in Natick, 4 lanes when a huge sustained gust of 50? mph slowly build up. the wind and rain almost knocked me over but because it built slowly (in about 2 seconds) I was able to lean into it. i was pretty weird though. I've walked leaning ino he wind but never did so on a bike. if my whole wind was like hat, hen maybe I would have said it was a bad idea to ride
Also, Last week we had steady winds out of the East at night around 28mph, gusting near 40 or 50. I hit a headwind going home that I could barely maintain 3 or 4mph on the flat. I don't know where I would draw the line, but I imagine in the plains states you have to draw it somewhere. |
My one demoralizer is the wind and I fight a headwind almost every trip...My commute is E for 2 miles or so then NW for about 2.5 miles angling off to NE for a few hundred yards..Almost without fail the the morning report is winds from the NE and lately it's been 15mph+..I suffer through it and push but man it's a killer to look down at the GPS and read that im going 16 mph or less ..

I'm not proud. I drive if I can expect 25-30mph winds directly in my face. I ride for fun, and if it's not going to be fun, I don't ride.

Wind hasn't stopped me so far - and we've had a lot of it, but I will pull the plug if the high wind warnings are out and they're talking over 40 mph (gusts) I guess.
|
I had an extra hot curry for dinner last night. The 'wind' I generated during my ride this morning wasn't so much a problem for me as it was for the guy drafting me..... it must have peeled the paint off his frame before killing him. :p
|
I've ridden in wind gusts ranging from 25-35 mph plenty of times. However, we recently had a day with steady winds about 30 mph and gusts up 45-50 mph, and I drove that day instead. It not just because it's miserable riding in high winds, but it's also dangerous. When I'm riding on a 4-lane road with cars passing me at 45 mph, the last thing I want is a crosswind hitting me a 40+ mph. I don't have a death wish.

Just learn some extra curse words to throw back at the wind. Though tail winds are a joy.
|
Yea if the winds are bad enough, I won't bike. Then again, I weigh only 110 pounds and my bike is light weight, so for me a gust that might not bother you could send me flying into a parked car or curb.

I elected to drive the one day during the past year when we had forecasts of 50 knot winds. I feared not only the wind, but what the storm would do to the drivers of the cars. In lesser wind, I have to make choice to really push through it, or give in a little and gear down a bit to just "chill" through it. Yesterday I chose to chill: Thursdays are the toughest day for me no matter what the weather is. Legs are tired, and there is no TGIF getting me cranked up.
|
One of my worst scares ever was a gust that hit me from the side unexpectedly and about got me run over.
That said if the temps are up and the listed gusts are under 25 I usually ride. Cold and gusts up near 30+ I tend to wuss and drive. |
I have to admit I have bowed out on a windy day or two. Around here it's normally nice and calm in the morning, but many afternoons bring headwinds of 30-40 knots coming right off the ocean. Probably makes me a wimp considering my relatively short/flat commute, but those days it no longer feels short nor flat. If riding becomes a chore instead of a joy, I may be tempted to hang it up for a while and just don't want that temptation.
