Tornadoes and flying forestry aside, though, I will ride in almost anything.

I've only heard of one person riding through a tornado....

Now riding with the wind, that's another question entirely. :D

Never happened to me... it's always headwind for some reason :(

No.
I've been out in winds at 35mph gusting to 50+. You have to be careful.
I wouldn't ride in a tornado, though.

I accidentally rode in a tornado once, Long time ago. At the time I didn't know that it was a tornado.

I'm reminded of this YouTube video I saw last night.

I've walked leaning ino he wind but never did so on a bike. if my whole wind was like hat, hen maybe I would have said it was a bad idea to ride

I commute year round (Boston to Waltham) and I experienced this for the first time this year, too and it WAS weird. Same experience, I'm *really* leaning and I'm *not* turning. As i was leaning left, I was afraid the wind would suddenly subside and I would arc right out into traffic.

Also, Last week we had steady winds out of the East at night around 28mph, gusting near 40 or 50. I hit a headwind going home that I could barely maintain 3 or 4mph on the flat. I don't know where I would draw the line, but I imagine in the plains states you have to draw it somewhere.

My one demoralizer is the wind and I fight a headwind almost every trip...My commute is E for 2 miles or so then NW for about 2.5 miles angling off to NE for a few hundred yards..Almost without fail the the morning report is winds from the NE and lately it's been 15mph+..I suffer through it and push but man it's a killer to look down at the GPS and read that im going 16 mph or less ..

Is that "sub -30" or "sub 30"? If you're really talking sub -30, then you're damn rugged!:thumb:

yyyyupp...

Wind hasn't stopped me so far - and we've had a lot of it, but I will pull the plug if the high wind warnings are out and they're talking over 40 mph (gusts) I guess.

Cyclaholic 03-04-10 09:15 PM

I had an extra hot curry for dinner last night. The 'wind' I generated during my ride this morning wasn't so much a problem for me as it was for the guy drafting me..... it must have peeled the paint off his frame before killing him. :p

tarwheel 03-04-10 09:25 PM

I've ridden in wind gusts ranging from 25-35 mph plenty of times. However, we recently had a day with steady winds about 30 mph and gusts up 45-50 mph, and I drove that day instead. It not just because it's miserable riding in high winds, but it's also dangerous. When I'm riding on a 4-lane road with cars passing me at 45 mph, the last thing I want is a crosswind hitting me a 40+ mph. I don't have a death wish.

Just learn some extra curse words to throw back at the wind. Though tail winds are a joy.

BoldMoves 03-05-10 12:50 PM

Yea if the winds are bad enough, I won't bike. Then again, I weigh only 110 pounds and my bike is light weight, so for me a gust that might not bother you could send me flying into a parked car or curb.

At least there are some advantages to my being a Clyde... ;)

AzTallRider 03-05-10 01:19 PM

I elected to drive the one day during the past year when we had forecasts of 50 knot winds. I feared not only the wind, but what the storm would do to the drivers of the cars. In lesser wind, I have to make choice to really push through it, or give in a little and gear down a bit to just "chill" through it. Yesterday I chose to chill: Thursdays are the toughest day for me no matter what the weather is. Legs are tired, and there is no TGIF getting me cranked up.

Grim 03-06-10 08:35 AM

One of my worst scares ever was a gust that hit me from the side unexpectedly and about got me run over.

That said if the temps are up and the listed gusts are under 25 I usually ride. Cold and gusts up near 30+ I tend to wuss and drive.

missile meister 03-06-10 09:23 AM

I have to admit I have bowed out on a windy day or two. Around here it's normally nice and calm in the morning, but many afternoons bring headwinds of 30-40 knots coming right off the ocean. Probably makes me a wimp considering my relatively short/flat commute, but those days it no longer feels short nor flat. If riding becomes a chore instead of a joy, I may be tempted to hang it up for a while and just don't want that temptation.
