It was glorious outside today and I loved each and every kilometre on my grocery shopping excursion. Tomorrow promises to be even better (especially since I'm taking the afternoon off to do nothing but ride my bike).

Got in my first round trip commute without lights since October. And there were....gasp....other commuters on my route. I haven't seen them in months. I also got to see my tires spinning since I rode a bike without fenders for the first time since October. And it was the maiden voyage of my new Pacer. Fun!

Unfortunately, I noticed significant increase in salmon population as well :( Why can't people get this?

- you're going the wrong way!
- I know...
- so why are you doing this, if you know???

Aaaaaargh!!!! I just have absolutely no sympathy for wrong-way cyclists. All others I can live with, these idiots get under my skin.

Other than that, yesterday ride home was awesome, 65F, sunny. I took a detour through Brooklyn and ended up doing about 11 miles instead the usual 7 and I plan the same today :D

they are popping up like fire flies in my neck of the woods. it's nice to see. I'm glad I rode through the winter. some of the faces I've seem haven't been tha happiest. we;ve had road closures and traffic jams due to flooding and there was one guy on a bike. I was so jealous - I shouted out to him that I wish I was on a bike too but I don't he understood. He was trying to figure out his shoes or gears or something.

Standalone 03-18-10 06:47 PM

I see more bikes, but still no one who looks like they're going to work.

... I'm seeing tons of folks on the road now. good for my ego as a blast by them.

sadly... it is going to snow tomorrow :( spring... not so fast

Definitely more actual commuters this week in NYC: bags, panniers, shoes strapped to racks, some even in work clothing (slacks, shirts), etc.

David, thankfully I have yet to feel or see any. But there sure has been a lot of flotsam to dodge in front of the Belle because of the flooding of the O... a sign of spring for sure.

My commute takes me through rural (becoming suburban) areas in southern Indiana. The mosquitoes are definitely making a comeback. They were sticking to my jersey yesterday.

I ride on the road, so the river debris isn't a problem. Are you riding the riverwalk?

no motor? 03-19-10 10:07 AM

I had my first ninja of the season appear out of the dark yesterday on my first trip home when I turned onto one of the MUPs I use. Black clothes on a black bike and a surprised look on his face as we passed each other.

rumrunn6 03-19-10 10:10 AM

we should carry water balloons filled with red paint for black ninjas. just so they would have a clue what they would look like if they were ever struck by a car

Yup. I live in Butchertown just 1/2 mile from River Road and work at 7th and Market... so I'm on the "Loop De Ville" most of the time when commuting to work. However now that the weather is getting warm there are more people using the Loop in the evenings so I'll probably start riding the streets again.

Odd story in the Bee today, on just this subject. Can't tell if it's about the weather, community, or business.

Sacramento-area bicyclists should respond to fine weather

Published Friday, Mar. 19, 2010

The bicycle business generally depends on good weather, much like ice cream shops trust summer scorchers to help sell a lot of cones.
And this weekend's conditions should make people in the bike business and those who ride in the Sacramento region very happy.
Warm temperatures and breezes easing from the strong winds that blew through the region earlier this week will create near-perfect conditions.
The forecast for today and the weekend is for sunny skies and temperatures about 75 degrees, a comfortable exclamation to end a rain-free week of beautiful weather.
So expect to see cyclists out in force.
"The bike industry is weather dictated," said Jesse Scatton, owner of East Sac Bike shop, 5520 H St. "When it is nice out, people ride."
Once the weather has been about 70 degrees for a week or 10 days straight, people are ready to pedal, Scatton said.
"If history repeats itself, we should be pretty busy this weekend," he said.
Eric Alley, general manager at Bob's Cycle Center, 9920 Fair Oaks Blvd., agrees that weather is a bike business trigger, at least in the Golden State.
"If it rains here in California, people will not shop for a bicycle," he said. "That's not the case in other parts of the country. In Portland, for example, it can be pouring rain there, which it does a lot, and they will still shop and buy bicycles."
Many of those bicyclists will be heading to the Jedediah Smith Bike Trail through the American River Parkway as well as other popular paths, and traffic is expected to increase accordingly.
Steve Flannery, chief ranger for Sacramento County parks, reminds cyclists to obey the rules of the road, such as stopping at stop signs on their way to the trail.
And once on the path, keep the speed down.
"We hope that they will adhere to the 15 mph speed limit," he said. "And, as a courtesy, when passing on the left side, call out, 'Bike on your left.' "
Crashes happen every year when walkers or riders drift to the left when they don't release that they are being passed on the thin ribbon of asphalt that winds along the rivers.
This weekend, joggers, walkers and cyclists will be competing for space trail.
"We're thinking it is going to be packed," said Flannery.
Many riders will mount up for the first time in awhile, bike shop owners agree.
"They look at their bike and realize their tires are flat, so they take it in to get it serviced," said East Sac Bike's Scatton. "Or they see the neighbor riding and think it would be a good idea to buy a new bike."
Scatton said many this weekend will be shopping for so-called "comfort bikes," big sellers with retirees, baby boomers and kids, Scatton said.
"Everybody likes to be comfortable when they ride around," he said. "The comfort bike gives a relaxed riding position. That allows fairly sedentary people to ride a bike more. The rider is upright and the hands are above the waist so there is no pressure on the wrists, shoulders, neck, elbows and back."
Spring officially arrives on Saturday when weather will be pedal perfect. The forecast from the National Weather Service:
Today: Sunny, high near 78 degrees.
Saturday: Sunny, high near 75 degrees.
Sunday: Sunny, high near 73 degrees.

During the winter I wear ash knickers, black vest, black gloves, black arm warmers... and ride a beautifully black bike. Also, I ride SS so I'm basically silent. You throw paint at me and I'll break out my nunchucks.

But... i also use lights, have reflectors wear a white helmet and crazy colored shoes. So maybe those items offset my otherwise ninja-like qualities.

Either way you better kick your panniers to the curb and ride like the lightening otherwise you'd be toast.
