Your Favorite Commuter Tire

Hey gang,

I have a fascination for tires and all the different types. Kind of a crazed hobby you could say.

Lately my commuter has been running conti double fighters. Nice tires, great grip. Thinking of switching to conti contacts for the summer. I usually stick with 700 x 37 range give or take a few.

What have you tried so far??

Favorite?

Least Favorite?

Specialized Armadillos on my hybrid and Panaracer Pasela tourguard on my other bikes. Some folks don't care for the Armadillos cause they say the tires are slow rolling but I don't seem to have a problem like that. Probably cause I ride like a slug. Oh well I get there on time so thats what counts in my mind.

I use Forte 700x28 with kevlar lining. They're cheap, but get the job done and last long enough.

700x28 Conti 4seasons. Offers good balance of ride, flat protection, wear and absolutely insaaaane wet grip. Only one puncture since October, and I see a lot of broken glass on my commute.

Good Luck

my commuter has 700x28 gatorskins. haven't gotten a flat yet (only ~1000 miles combined). I have had great success with the 28mm gatorskins on bad pavement, on gravel, on whatever, so I see little reason to go thicker (except on my mtn bike)

In the past, I've had a commuter bike with a 26x2.0 Continental slick ("town and country" IIRC) on the front and 26x1.25 Forte something generic slick in the back.

I've done about 1500km with a pair of 700x28 gatorskins without problems... mostly street use, some gravel country roads and lots of various road detritus left behind from the snowbanks.

Vittoria Randos 700x28 on the roady and Specialized Crossroads Armadillo 26x1.95 on the cruiser.

I hated what ever the Kenda garbage was that came on my bike. I don't remember what they were but they flatted way to often to be useful for commuting.

I've been using Gatorskins, but thought I'd give the 4-Seasons a try this year. I agree. Wet grip is insane.

Too bad the OP is looking for 37mm...

Armadillo All Condition Elite 700x25. Great light weight tire with little rolling resistant. I have not noticed any speed difference compare to the Conti ultra sport. I gave them the test of punture proof each day I clock out at work when I roll my bike over sliver of metal shaving on the floor from the milling machine. So far non of those sliver got through. Too lazy to carry my bike over the floor to the clock out and one day, one of those sliver will make it's way to the tube. Until then......knock on wood.

My current fav. is Schwalbe Marathon Plus. At least, once I finally got the damn thing on the rim, anyway.

I'm using Schwalbe Marathon Pluses 32mm on most of my bikes. I would probably switch to 28s when these wear out... just that it takes a while.

I also have an older bike with 27 inches tires. I'm using Nashbar Prima tires, which have a kevlar belt and are much lighter than the Schwalbes.

Favourite tyres are Schwalbe... best mileage has come from the 2.0 Hurricane Sport which have gone over 10,000 km without a flat and still look like they have another 10,000 km in them.

Really like the basic Marathon and have had one flat caused by an industrial staple on what was a virtually new tyre.

I really don't get many flats at all... have had 2 this year after going many years and 10's of thousands of km without and figure I was just due regardless of what tyre I am running.

Gatorskins are nice, but I like Pasela TGs. They're a bit slower feeling and heavier, but much better wet grip and they're cheaper.

Marathon Plus on one bike and Gatorskins on the other. Love both. First two years I commuted I had so many flats I lost count (at least 20). Not a one since. (I just jinxed myself)

I've had one flat on a set of 23mm Vittoria Rubino Pros in over 3000km, and they've still got life left in them. They're also cheap and light.

I've had great luck running Conti GP 4000s and GP 4 Seasons in 700 x 25 and 700 x 28. My route is very hilly, so I want a reasonably light tire that is also durable and handles well.

Marathon Supremes. No flats and very grippy. The 35s are actually pretty close to 37mm.

I just changed out my Conti's GP 4 Seasons after close to a year of use. I started seeing cuts in the tread and last Friday I got a puncture from a stone shard and that was it for me. In a lot of ways it was a nice light tire, but not as puncture resistant as I'd hoped.

Forte GT2/k 700x28 w/ thorn-resistant tubes. Well over 1,500 miles without a flat and they look like they've got a long way to go.

Michelin City in 26x1.75 have worked well for me for 2 years with no flats. I just got them in 700x35 for my new commuter. They are well priced and so far so good.

so far great variety. it is clear that two brands are starting to really stand out, Conti and Schwalbe.
