Some advertisers here are IDIOTS!

Check out my thread " Going to INCREDIBLE lengths" about me being buzzed by idiots with a locomotive horn. It is now FULL of adverts for super loud horns INCLUDING TRAIN HORNS! So I guess the NEXT step is that on threads discussing bike locks, the advertisers will sell power saws and huge bolt cutters that defeat bike locks!

The advertisements are triggered automatically by key words.

I think you are angry at a computer program.

It may also be angry at you. If it is, be afraid.

Grim 03-30-10 03:15 PM

Its key word triggered advertisements or membership. Internet is not free.

What ads? Red Star and Firefox ad block enabled.

Since I work in advertising, I'd be hypocritical to have the ads blocked, wouldn't you say?

Nah, on the contrary. It would be extremely awesome.

Here, we'll test your assumption.

Power saws

Bolt cutters

Bolt cutters

That should bring those ad robots scrambling.

Artkansas 03-30-10 03:45 PM

Nope, but it did bring out some ads for air horns. ;)

Too late, dude. There's a thread about locking techniques, and I posted a screen cap of the keyword served advert at the top of the screen for a lockpicking equipment website.

Not if you paid for a membership.

destikon 03-30-10 04:22 PM

Almost makes me want to turn off adblock. I get sick of those lame "couger life" ads. So yeah, no adverts for me.

mtnwalker 03-30-10 04:31 PM

Advertisement = Free speech
Free speech = Freedom
Freedom = US Military

Why do you hate the US Military?

;)

In general, I'd say no. I know a few bloggers (who are successful enough to earn a decent secondary income) whose essential attitude towards adblock is this:
- cost-per-impression ads don't pay off very quickly, the good money is in pay-per-click
- adblock users wouldn't click on ads anyway, but are actually interested in your content
- indeed regular readers don't really click on ads much at all
- both groups increase site traffic, which leads to more exposure, which leads to higher google rank
- the sheep that google brings in click on ads
- PROFIT!

Regardless, I work for an oilfield services company, yet consume very little oil. I don't feel hypocritical...I'm just profiting off of other peoples' addiction.

wak9 03-30-10 05:02 PM

This is why I use AdBlock Plus! I don't see any ads at all!!

I can't imagine why. As much as many of us would like to take many advertising people, particularly the ones who are the really scary ones that do some pretty crafty psychological tricks on people, and make them eat their own dogfood 24/7, I can't imagine people not trying to avoid the crap as much as possible even if they do work in it. Unless you are looking at it out of personal interest, anyway.

annc 03-30-10 05:44 PM

That's strange; I get ads for Ad Block Plus on this thread.

Me too. I know it's bad for the sites we visit but I can't stomach idiotic, automatic ads or anything animated. It's either block the ads or not visit the site at all.

JoeyBike 03-30-10 06:49 PM

I don't block them. I never click on them either. Matter of fact, they have to be really obnoxious for me to even notice them.

I'll pay my dues letting them show up. Some are quite entertaining.

Here here! I mean, right now, I've got an add on this thread reading "Many Sounds of Truck Horns". That's comedy gold, right there, and I get it for free!

ddez 03-30-10 07:54 PM

Frankly ive never even paid any attention to the adds. Dont even notice them actually. If i want something, i Google for it,until then im not interested. But now op has mentioned it, thats unbelievable they do that. Doesnt that PO people so they dont buy? Guess i still dont understand or know much about the internet.

bugly64 03-30-10 08:20 PM

+1 on the membership. Bikeforumness is much better without the ads.

Arcanum 03-30-10 08:30 PM

Yes, computers are indeed stupid. :)
