Oh crap, got to go!.....Decision time

Exactly what the title implies.

Umm the Murphy Law thread reminded me of that crappy morning. I was in the main road at 4:30am when Jeezus "not now". Yep, bowl movement time. Nearest open gas station was back about 3mi and requires pedaling up an incline over the freeway overpass. Lucky I was only several bock from train station. I ended up walking my bike due to cramp because if I continue to pedal on my saddle, it would have been a messy start for the day. Got to train station and everything came out ok.

This is something I never consider as to what to do if this ever happen. I hear some of ya have long commute and even on trail and such. It's not like driving where it only matter of minutes to a gas station while having the luxery of sitting instead of pedaling. So what do you do if the ultimate nature call arises in the middle of your commute and there is no open gas station or coffee shop in site? This happened to anyone?

Anyone dare to share or comment or have cool ideas on this subject?

Closest I ever came to messing my shorts was on a loaded bike tour of the East Coast. 25 miles in each direction to the nearest towns. Surrounded by trees farms, crop fields, etc. Just pulled over, dropped a duece in a field behind a tree, wiped using the emergency TP any good cycle tourer carries, and was on my way.

My riding buddies had a laugh while I was squatting behind a tree, threatening to push me over into the pile of dookie while I had my lycra around my ankles.

Yea, no place like home huh colleen! A stash of tp and some wet wipes is in order but I hope you never have to use them! Just knowing in the back of your mind that you could if you had to may help:)

mechanicalron 04-07-10 11:28 AM

O-yea,,, do you have a rain poncho/out house???

xtrajack 04-07-10 12:44 PM

I like the rain poncho/out house idea, would never occurred to me. Thank you.

Got that right, and the comfort of driving ASAP to a outhouse is part of the luxery lost for the love of commuting by bike. I like the poncho idea. Sound like something I'm gonna start carrying one with me when I do long distant road cycling out in the middle of knowhere.

If I'm not mistaken, think if the poncho covering your lower half while you are doing your stuff while wearing a poncho.

Put on your rain poncho, drop your drawers and squat. ;)

It doesn't work nearly as well if all you got is one of them cute little form-fitting roadie rain coats.

Yes and you can act as if you are reading a good book on the side of the road, ha ha ha!

So that explain all the sport pages from newspaper along the side if the road. I guess if one were to do a Century out in Middle of Timbuku, then he/she better bring the sport section or People magazine. :)

may I suggest a closer look at your nutrition and planning? I personally am pretty anal about staying regular ... hahaha Timing your food and fluids can really be helpful (early dinner and lots of fluids). Another thing I do is get up early and have a regular full breakfast with 1 full glass of water and 2 cups of coffee. I'm usually off to the races well before its departure time (1 ~ 2 hrs after alarm). Sometimes I can get an additional weight loss session in when I arrive at the office - which is yet another good reason for arriving an hour before anyone else.

LOL. I hope your race is a Time Trial :)
You do have a valid point though. Tuesday to Friday has more consistency than Monday. I sometime skip riding on the weekend depending on what my SO wants to do. That being said along with eating out over the weekend can do wonders to the digestion system for Monday morning. Going to have to eat light on Sunday dinner.

+1, Regularity is the shi.. well, it's great is what I mean to say. Heavy on the veggies, light on the cheese, a couple of cups of coffee, and plenty of time in the morning means that I'm always a little bit lighter in the saddle than when I got out of bed.

It'll catch up with you if you sleep in though. I've hit the door running late a couple of times, only to come right back in because the bowels awoke as I was running down the stairs. Still, I think that I get in less trouble being a few minutes late to work than showing up with sharted shorts. It's a lot less embarrassing, at least.

MVclyde 04-07-10 07:38 PM

Yeah, I always linger a bit and assess the situation (if you know what I mean) before I head out to the garage. When in doubt, I hit the latrine. Better to leave a few minutes late then get caught with your pants down. :) Slightly different situation, but a friend of mine is a marathon runner. He never goes on a run without stuffing some toilet paper in his shorts. He doesn't think twice about copping a squat on the side of the road. He's probably a master at finding a good tree or bush.

woodenidol 04-07-10 08:21 PM

If I have an "inkling" I may have to go, I linger too, though I dont have much lingering time, as I leave pretty soon after getting up. For me the key is not eating before I leave. I just drink a glass of water. I only have half a colon left, so understand colon management and the horrible feeling of wondering if the nearest potty spot, is near enough. smile.

Been lucky enough to avoid #2 emergencies in my years/decades of riding. Have found that the cornfields of Central Indiana are great for #1 situations, though. Not much good, however, until the corn is at least waist-high.

DX-MAN 04-07-10 10:37 PM

Had a few #1 calls, as well; never a #2, though, always able to stay pretty well-regulated.

Even waist-high corn doesn't always help; a few years ago, on a small group ride (my bud and his girl), she had to go #1 -- BAD! But she refused our suggestions to water the cornfield, even when we told her we'd be in the field across the road for her privacy's sake. We wound up slow-rolling the last 8 miles home, her gritting her teeth, because she refused to 'let go'. It was the topper to a perfect day -- a 35-miler turned into 50 because of a poorly-marked route, and she had to be coddled. I didn't mind the extra time/distance in the saddle, but the last half was about as much fun as a binge hangover.

dynodonn 04-07-10 10:47 PM

I guess I'm fortunate on not having any bowel emergencies while on the commute. I have myself scheduled to usually have my business taken care just before I leave on the way to work, or just before leaving work.

FreddyV 04-08-10 05:00 AM

Once I had to get off the bike and hop into the bushes alongside the road. Wasn't fun as it was broad daylight. And I had nothing to wipe the crack.

colleen c 04-08-10 07:01 AM

Hmmm, I've read the word "cornfield" along with #1 several time here. Let see here: yellow corn and #1....think it's gonna be a while before I chew on a yellow corn

I always make sure that it's a field full of corn destined for use in the making of automobile fuel.
