A great commuting day

As posted in "How was your commute...", I started a new job and thus a new commute last week. Yesterday was such a great commute that I had to share it with everyone.

The first thing that made my day was encountering another cyclist commuting on the same route. I was riding along at my usual pace, ~18 mph, when I suddenly heard "Good morning" and another rider went right by. I of course picked up my pace a little and tried to hang with him. He pulled away for a while but we wound up next to each other at a light (I was turning left, he was going straight). I didn't get to say much to him; I hope I'll be able to ride with him again.

Then I arrived here at my new building. As I pulled up to the bike rack a big guy came out of the door and said, "Hey, can I talk to you?" Having been hassled by security--and others--too many times at my old job, I instantly became nervous. But the guy came up and said, "I'm a cyclist too, and I want more people to realize you can ride to this building! My company is funding a 5-foot-wide paved path from Chapel Hill to here so people can ride here more safely. We're also going to have a thing called "5 on the Dot" here at the building on May 20th. We're going to have a tent, a band, a bike mechanic, and beer (for people not riding) so cyclists in the area can meet each other and have a celebration before riding home. Do you know any ways I can get the information out to more people?"

I've since emailed him links to 2 of the local mailing lists and a couple of web sites (including this one). He really appreciated the info. I thought it was only fair, since he made my day!

Not sure about the rest of the job, but it sounds like the cycling aspects are superb. Congrats.

That's awesome. How great must that feel to start work for a new company and find that they are progressive and proactive like that.
