Kona Humu
 

I was wondering how many of you use a Kona Humu single speed for commuting?
I am riding an old 1980's mountain bike I "commuterized" and its wearing out. I rarely use the gears because they don't shift so well anymore. I stay in 32:16 most of the time. I was really considering the Kona Humu for a commuter because of its value, durability and the fact I can customize it any way I like (fenders, back rack, bags).

So if any of you are familliar with this bicycle, please let me know what its like and what you think.:)

Cool. Looks like my Gary Fisher Klunker.... the Kona Humu is a homage to the famous Schwinn Excelsior, that legend has it, Gary Fisher found in a farmer's shed and modified for racing down Mt Tam's famous Repack trail.

I think better than a cruiser. Consider it a poor man's Retrovelo! :thumb:

I have a mid 90s Humu I bought new originally. A fun bike but the frame at the rear is low enough so you might have difficulty finding a rack that will fit and be level without making your own front rack straps. The most obvious change I see is mine has a straight frame top tube. The original wheels were single wall and I tacoed the rear one fairly quickly. It is quite light weight for a cruiser. BTW the original full model name for it was the "Humuhumu Nukunuku A Pua'a" and the full name is spelled out on my frame.

Mine now has a old Sturmey Archer 5 speed alloy hub installed, the S5-2 Alloy, that I recently got as a NOS item. IMO that makes it a lot more versatile bike. I have also upgraded to newer & better cantilever brakes.
