Tires for a Mountain Bike

I want a slick set of tires to put on my mountain bike for getting around the college campus. I realize there are many threads on this topic already but I need some tires that will withstand some abuse such as hopping up curbs, potholes, and riding down flights of concrete stairs. Will I be able to get by with 1.5 inch tires? Thicker slicks such as the maxxis hookworm seem too heavy at 1050g compared to my current WTB velociraptor tires at 687g. I really want a faster easier rolling tire. Does anyone have any good tire suggestions? This is all urban riding with an occasional trip to the bike path. Wet weather performance is not a concern.

I put WTB Slickosaurus tires on my MTB for NYC commuting. They seem as good as any. They are 26x1.5. As for durability I don't know as I've only had them for about 2 months now. I don't ride down concrete steps, but they've seen their share of NYC potholes.

Performance has a set of 26 inch road tires for CHEAP I put on the bike my wife uses on the trainer and the MUP. Not bad for a tire I paid $12.00 for. Shaved a lot of weight and drag off her mountain bike. Defiantly made for a better riding experience for her while I transition her to a proper drop bar road bike.

My Big Apples are fairly light for the width and roll well.

I run Kenda Kwests 26x1.5 w/ K-Shield. It's been good so far. Cheap too.

Big fan of Michelin Transworld City. Tires look brand new after many, many miles.
