Just ordered my first Commuter!

Hello, I have a similar thread in the Clydesdale section. I've decided I want to ride to work. It's about 10 miles each direction. I've not ridden since I was a kid (I'm 28). I just ordered a Schwinn Sportterra Comp. I went with the Schwinn because I get employee pricing through my work (Nautilus Inc.). I also just purchased a rack and net, pump and multi tool kit, and a helmet. There are other things that I need but this should get me started. Anyways, just wanted to say hi. I know there's a lot of info here, if you have any advice I'm all ears.

Welcome! I'd suggest a spare tube (quicker than patching). I'd also suggest some lights. Even if you don't plan to commute when it is dark, having front and rear lights (flashing mode makes them a bit more visible) will help you be seen. Depending on what you plan to carry, a rack bag or panniers will be easier to deal with than trying to strap down a bunch of stuff with a net.

Congrats. Nice bike. Ten miles is quite a bit, so take it easy there at first. What do you mean by 'net' btw.

Practice a tube change at home before you have a flat on the road.

You will learn much.

Casey - good to see you here from the Gear Page! Have fun and as others have mentioned, take it easy for a while.

Welcome. It looks like a nice bike. Disc brakes and Deore derailleurs is pretty good stuff. In addition to the light, you'll probably want a computer, fenders, and a rear rack. Oh, and a good helmet if you don't have one yet. Not what you want to hear after just dropping six hundo, but there it is.

When you get it, post pix in the commuter bike pix thread above.

Fortunately I got the bike for much less than $600. I ordered a helmet, rack, tool kit/flat repair kit, and cargo net. I had to be selective about the accessories that I bought just because everything is adding up quickly. I still need a bike lock (my work is very bike friendly, I should be able to bring it inside), fenders (not immediate need as it's pretty dry this time of year), and lights (I only plan on riding during the day, but will get these maybe next month). I bought the cargo net because I have a decent backpack that I will strap down onto the rack, instead of buying panniers.

Megalowmatt: thanks for pointing me over to this place, obviously tons of useful information.
