The downside is that I can no longer jump on a great deal on Craiglist when I see a bike for sale. I have yet figure out how to get the bike home afterward.

Can you buy it and lock it near where you bought it and retrieve it later?

I've done the skateboard thing with a coworker before. It was just for a few blocks though. Honestly.. we didn't 'need' to do it, just thought it'd be fun.

Is that a euphemism?

That's a good thought I've haven't look into yet. I van use my lock on my bike and lock it up in a safe resident area or a busy parking area and come back with my car. The only limiting factor will still be limiting to how far if a way I can travel by train (bart) and bus depending where the seller is and want to meet up at. However at least it is a possibility.

Mount one of these to a small slab of wood and bolt to your rack. Or, drill mounting holes in your rack and use wingnuts to mount.:
