Since I started posting here. And today, for the first time in well over a decade, I commuted by bike. Not the full distance, but more than I had anticipated.

Whatcha wanna know? Oh, yeah, you wanna know more about the commute. Well, let's see...

-Just missed the bus leaving work and didn't feel like waiting another 80 minutes for the next one. Checked bus guide (all routes and time tables in one handy dandy booklet). Next available bus on the next closest route (some 2 miles away) was doable, so off I went.

-My connecting bus back to where I park my car leaves the station just as I'm getting my bike off of the rack on the first bus. Next bus on that route is an hour away.

-There is a MUP (Katy trail) that starts just a few blocks from the station, and ends right across the street from the Wally world parking lot that I'm using as a "park and ride". I head for it, and originally planned on just going a couple of miles and then catching the bus at a park. I ended up doing the entire route. Did it roughly 45 minutes, which is a little faster than the bus.

And for the record, it was a backpack that was strapped to the rack.

Rode from the bus station to the car again. It took 62 minutes this time, because:

-Waited 8 minutes for a train to clear the intersection.
-Still a little tired and sore from yesterday
-Did not eat last night
-Grabbed the wrong sports bottle- it wouldn't fit in the cage
-Stopped at 4 of the 5 water fountains I saw. The first one I came to didn't work
-Muggier today, heat index of 95F. Yesterday was a comfortable 85F.

One thing I'd like to know is how long before my keister quits killing me?

Try soaking in a hot bath, if possible ... helps relax sore muscles. But to beat the bus one day, and still make it home in a respectable amount of time the next with all that working against you, is a bit of an accomplishment.

I'll make sure I grab the right bottle next time. Thinking it's about time that I pick up another bottle and cage for the other mounting point- the outside of the downtube. Good thing I've got a fender on that front wheel...

I'm ressurecting this because any new bike commuter is a huge success for us all. Congrats!

To your sore bum question--wear padded shorts and/or get a Brooks or Brooks-type saddle. I can tell the difference between my two bikes--one with Brooks/one without. But more expressly, if the saddle is right but you just need getting used to it, give it a month. If still sore beyond that, the saddle or riding position needs adjusting. Beware overly cushy/springy saddles.

I'd hardly call 2 days of inactivity a resurrection. But thanks anyway!

My LBS is a Terry saddle dealer, so I may look into that- though at the moment, a new saddle is not a priority. Like you said, give it some time. It may just be that I need to toughen up a little down there.

I'm wearing compression shorts as a base, and athletic shorts over. Most of my shorts are denim, but I'd imagine that would be too painful to wear while riding.

Third day, and I got to ride in the rain.

My co-worrkers and family question my sanity for actually opting to ride...

Now, I got to start researching rain gear, as what I used today ain't gonna cut it.

Yea, my fiance is still not convinced that I should be allowed to ride in the rain

Wait until you're married for a little more than a decade- that's when the questions of sanity come into play. My wife thinks I'm nuts in general, anyway!
