I used a small plastic grocery bag until getting my cover. I like the brooks cover quite a bit.

Dollar store shower caps fit the bill perfectly. I don't know if the cover that canyoneagle linked to is breathable, or if such a cover exists, but IMO the shower cap works great. It even doubles as a helmet cover once your butt is back in the saddle!

I travel a lot for my work and always keep the little disposable shower caps that you find in the hotel rooms. They work great, and are free.

I thought of getting one for my bike...BUT...its almost like a sign to thieves that you have a brooks saddle. A shower cap or a plastic bag works well and doesn't advertise your product...that being said the brooks covers are nice.

I bought mine inexpensively at Bells Bicycles...it was something like $10. I roll it under the rails and use it when it rains. As far as thieves stealing it...the thieves in Philly know a Brooks is an easy $40 with or without a plastic cover. If you have a Brooks and aren't putting a chain through the railings, you're probably not going to have it long.
