Koga Miyata expression Rohloff

I recently traded a nice cilo road bike I never rode for this 2005 Koga expression. It’s got a 14 speed Rohloff Speedhub and I’m really stoked on it. My usual ride to work is on a 1987 cannondale st400 that I love, but change is good, and this guys got fenders for those rain days. I’ve taken it for a couple test rides and I’m looking forward to breaking it in on my 6 mile commute.

Koga Miyata is a Dutch/Japanese partnership, right? This looks like it, and that's a good thing. Did you ever have dynamo lights before? I have dynamo lights on some of my bikes, and I love them.

No, this is my first dynamo hub. Looking forwards to not having to remember to charge my lights. Picked up a cheaper Buchel light on eBay. Meh. Not real happy with it. Said 40 lux, but I’m not so sure. I should have saved up for a decent light. Any recommendations?

As far as the company, the 2005 brochure I found online was in Dutch. The frame says handmade, and I don’t doubt it. The welds on this are really nice. Even smoother than my cannondale. It’s a different kind or ride. More curb jumping and dirt road fun.

Whoa, that's basically ideal. What is the wheel size?

The LED lamps have improved a lot since the bike was new. Even the cheaper dynamo lamps are excellent.

Nice full fender coverage for commuting, and mounts for a rear rack!

The wheels are 700c tires are 35. I’m sure I could fit bigger tires, but these feel really nice. I’ve put on an older Blackburn rack since that picture was taken. Same rack as my Cannondale, so it’s a no brainer to rig it up for a ride into work early in the morning. The only thing I was uneasy about was the suspension fork. I’ve got an aversion to them on multiple levels, but it’s got a lockout and tubing to run the dynamo wires so I’ll give it a shot for a while before I make up my mind.

Got a 04 WTR Koga-Miyata World tour (26" wheel) 10 years ago , they machined the fork to put a pannier rack on the lower end..

It came with Magura rim brakes, best thing since smoked herring.

The Busch & Müller dynamo lights are excellent. Buy the best one you can afford.

Nice! That rohloff hub alone is worth more than any of my whole bikes!

Pitlock Skewers , and an Axa or Abus frame mounted ring lock and security chain will help you keep it..

Ring locks go in front of the seat stays.. like this: from 08..

Fietsbob, how do you like the rohloff hub? This bike makes me wish I had more dirt roads and trails around. I think the Expression was specd with the magura hydraulic rim brakes, but they weren't on the bike when I got it. Thanks for the suggestion on the locks, but I'm really fortunate, my bikes go right in the firehouse with me.

Rohloff IGH is a 1 time investment that will work infinitely * Got a good deal on a Bike Friday Pocket LLama with one, too..

Oil change process is simple.. recently they changed how the sprocket goes on , so rather than the freewheel remover like tool,

holding the freewheel mech, of the hub, so you can unscrew the cog & flip it over..

you screw on a splined center and then the cogs come off with a snap ring, ..
