Something equipped with a Shimano Alfine 8 speed IG hub group, has a disc brake and Front Dyno-hub option.
plus, there is a Brifter made for that hub, though not by Shimano, from these guys :http://www.sussex.com.tw/versa.html
and Jtec makes a Bar-end shifter, to use Drop bars, and the IG hub If that is your wish.

You want cheap, go Trek PDX
Both the Trek PDX and Portland and very nice rides but neither has a lot of heel clearance for large panniers.

It is more of a purpose-built commuter but seems to be designed to offer much of the utility and comfort of a touring bike.

I just got back from a LBS looking for the Civia Rival w/ SRAM Rival components (they didn't have any in stock nor did their supplier). This link above appears to be bogus as it brings up information on model I'm not interested in. Click it and there is no information on this specific bike. Instead you get info regarding their Carbon Drive belt and Shimano’s Alfine rear hub model. It appears Civia is no longer offering this model.

If anybody knows this last statement to be false, I'd love to hear about it because I'm in the market for the Rival model.
