Going to look at an old Trek 460. What should I look for?
If it's good it'll be my new commuter so that I don't have to leave my nice mountain bike locked up outside all day. I've never owned a road bike of any kind at all and though I'm eager to learn, right now I don't know much about components or bike mechanics.
So what should I look for on an old bike like this. One concern is I'm a heavy rider at about 280lbs. My understanding is that these older frames are fairly durable but I need to look at the spoke count on the wheels and possibly upgrade them for my weight. What else should I look for when buying an older bike to be used as a commuter?

One thing to consider is that the Trek 460 is a full-on racing bike, and has no provisions for fenders or a rack (at least, mine doesn't). I have managed to attach fenders to mine with p-clips, but clearance is very tight. This may or may not be an issue for you.
Beyond that, check the frame for rust or signs of damage (wrinkles/bends in the tubing), etc.

I didn't get it. The frame was very rusted and was a bit too small for me. That usedbicycleguide.com link was very helpful though. I'll be more prepared in the future.

No big deal, you went and learned. Not a useless trip at all! Getting the right size in good quality will be the hardest part, keep picking at it.
Keep us posted if you find anything else.

Here's a link about the 460 https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/482467-85-trek-460-vs-84-miyata-710-a.html
An older road bike usually has a 36 spoke wheel on the rear, which is what you want at 280 lbs.
