I think I got a good deal today. I bought a Specialized Hard Rock for 25 dollars.
I know that the bike isn't hot, I met the owner at the bike repair and maintenance class that the LBS ran in March. She had mentioned in the class that she wanted to sell it. I didn't think that she was actually serious.

Today my wife and I were out doing the yard sale thing, we had stopped at a sale and this woman that was there recognized me from the class, I asked if she had sold her Hard Rock yet
She said that she hadn't, I asked if she was still interested in selling it, she said she was, then she said she wanted 25 dollars for it. I said "Sold."

Turns out the reason she wanted to sell it is because it is a mans frame. She actually kept the Huffy because it was a womans frame. I couldn't believe it.

Any ride-able named brand bike for $25 is a good deal. Throw some studded tires on that bike and use it for winter commuting, =)

Hard rocks are decent bikes. You got a smoking deal! Most wear good components on a good 4130 frame and make really decent commuters with the right tire selection. Try out a Specialized Hemisphere on the front and a Specialized Crossroad on the rear. Makes for a good mixed surface use bike that will do well on dry on and off road routes.

What, you got fleeced! I'll take it off your hands for $25.01. Hopefully you will learn your lesson next time something like that happens again.

I used a Hardrock as a utility bike for a bit. They're heavy, but they're solid and people seem to view them as straightforward. Good backup/guest bike.

Sweet find! My fist commuter was an early 90's Hark Rock. Still to this day, that was my favorite commuter.

I had a Specialized Hardrock way back when...perfectly adequate and affordable entry mountain bike. Great beater bike and for $25 you got something functional you can later sell for a decent profit. I figure it's probably worth $100-$125.

In general the steel rigid MTBs are a great buy. You can usually even get the real high end ones, things like stump jumpers made from DB Tange, for under $200.

My Hardrock has been an everyday commuter for around 13 years, and it's bombproof. I've taken it on the Hilly Hundred (Bloomington Indiana), and rode a century on it once. Great all-around utility bike.
