So I ended up getting a steamroller and not a cross check.
But cross check is still on my list. I love all of the surly bikes. Would take a LHT, karate monkey, pacer, big dummy, and cross and ride them all. Very cool company.

I hear ya. I've got a Steamroller, Cross-Check, and Karate Monkey. Used to also have an Instigator (now I regret selling it, since they stopped making them). Will be getting a Pugsley complete from the shop I work at soon probably. Wouldn't mind a fixed 650b'ed 1x1 just for the hell of it. Would LOVE a Big Dummy (waiting until I get a house or condo on the ground floor). Their new trailer and Troll look intriguing. My favorite bars of all time are the zero-rise Open Bar. Have been using Surly cogs and lockrings on my fixed gears since the beginning. Great products.

got one as a frame intending to set it up with IGH then changed my mind and put on a single 38t chainring with 11-28 8spd.
Rode it that way for a year. Was thinking of light touring bike and long tour but other things happened and I set it up with 30/44 double and chainguard and 12-32 8spd. Right bar end shifter and left down tube shifter. Cascadia fenders, Axiom Streamliner rear rack, small Velo-Orange Nitto type front rack, Son generator and Light On headlight. Heavy sucker now.

I commute on a Cross Check that I built up this summer. I bought the frame off Craig's List. I built it up with SRAM Rival groupset (minus breaks), Paul Touring brakes, Thomson seat post, Cane Creek headset, and Ritchey Comp stem and handlebars. I already had a set of Deep V wheels and a Prologo saddle. I put a Jandd rack on it, and recently got a set of Honjo fenders that I haven't installed yet. I had a blast building this thing. One of these days I'll post a picture. Maybe after I install the fenders.
Oh, and my lights just arrived today.....Magicshine front and Planet Bike rear. More is more when it comes to lighting....these things are bright!!
So far so good. I like the Cross Check as a commuter.
PS.... 12x25 cassette with 50-34 crankset. 700c x 28 tires.

That's because most are configured for cross racing (cross racers carry their bikes up the steep sections) which is not what a Cross Check is good. The Check is a a very versatile drop handle bike that can go off road; a triple makes perfect sense.

Yes. Who wouldn't? Mine is a year round commuter/town bike I built up from the frame new. Fenders, rack, brooks saddle, several sets of wheels. In the 4+ years I've had it has been set up as:
- Drop bar, single speed/fixie
- Drop bar, IGH 8 speed.
- Flat bar, single speed, studded tire winter machine.
- Currently an Albatross bar single speed. (which might be my favorite set up yet)
- Soon to be and Albatross bar, IGH 8 speed, studded tire winter bike.
Needless to say I love it dearly, and I love the versatility. I love the way it changes with the seasons. I highly recommend it.
