Please respond to this post ONLY if you are a former trout, ninja or ninja/trout.

I 'm fully aware that few if any such folks who currently indulge in this read, or belong to any bike forum. I am hoping that I'm wrong, but maybe a reformed ninja or trout can give us some insights. WHY WHY WHY did you do it? Please let the rest of us in on it. I have had three interactions with you folks on the road. I've told 2 trout who were paralleling me on the other side of the road that how they were riding was illegal and dangerous. One was curious and i explained that the law stated that bicycles were to "go with the flow" of traffic. He told me that he thought the OPPOSITE was legal. The other one just laughed and yelled "I don't CARE!"

The other encounter was a near head-on collision with a ninja/trout whose pedal reflectors were were lit by my lights and I swerved at the last second. We both spun out, stopped and were still facing each other. BRAINDEAD BOY yelled "Why 'd ya do that!" I told him. "You're completely in the wrong! You have no lights, you're wearing black, and you're on the wrong side of the road.!" Why didn't YOU avoid ME??? I HAVE LIGHTS and can be seen!!!" He appeared to be ready to argue, but instead just closed his open mouth.

So I guess I'm hoping to find out if it's ignorance that's the problem, arrogance, or willful stupidity that's the problem. If it's the first, education can solve the problem. Only Darwin can solve the other 2. I'm really hoping for a response from my target readers, but I'm not looking for side comments. Thanx.

That question is an exercise in futility. If they had a brain, they probably wouldn't be doing it anyway.

"My side of the road doesn't have a bike lane, but yours does, so I'm riding on your side."
"Your side of the road is safer."
"Your side of the road is closer to where I'm going."
"It's easier to see cars coming towards you than those which come up behind you."
"I'm only riding a short distance on your side, then I'm turning. Honest."
"I don't really know where I'm going and just happen to be on your side of the road."
"The bike lane is wide enough for two bikes to pass each other. Share the lane!"
"A car cut me off back there and now I'm on the your side of the road. Deal with it."

What's a trout? And what's with this commuter cyclist obsession with fish?

If you're a bike ninja and no one can see you, your only defense to not getting hit is to being able to see everyone else. Thus you "need" to ride against traffic.

This spring I accidentally ended up needing to bike across town after dark, and I didn't have a light. It was pretty fun (though the vast majority of my route was on bike path, not streets). It's really amazing how much you can see when you don't have direct street lights on your path but you do have ambient city light. I was really surprised to find I didn't really need a light as long as I was the only one on the path. There's was like 1% of the path that went under a bridge where I couldn't see, but that was about it.

Ironically, the only real danger to me under those circumstances were *other* bike ninjas! lol They were moving fast and since neither of us had a light we couldn't see each other until it was to late to be able to stop. I thought it would pretty ironic if we crashed...

I am an occasional salmon. When I take the LFP downtown, I ride against traffic for one block, since it is the only place I can cross a busy 4 lane road with traffic lights.
I don't care whether you call it ignorance, arrogance, or stupidity. I am not going to change my behavior

Gotcha. I don't mean to pick on you; apparently I'm a linguistic peever. And it annoys me a little bit every time I read the wrong word. It makes me stop and try to figure out what the person really meant. In the case of salmon vs salmons, or their vs there, it's pretty easy ... but still a very little bit jarring to the brain.

I have been a salmon before when I accidentally turned onto an empty one way street. I was a salmon because I didn't know it was one way until I was in the middle of crossing a busy road and was committed. I was on it for a block until I got out of there. So I was a salmon because I was lost.
