Best Rack for Panniers?
 

I have been using a trunk bag and sunlite rack for the past year, but wanted to get some panniers. I bought the Axiom Mackenzie panniers, but they dont fit on my rack very well. There is no lower mount on my rack. This seems pretty common with the lower end racks such as mine. It works fine for my trunk bag.

I was looking at some of the racks, and there are alot of options out there. I saw the Axiom Journey Tubular rack. Seems like what I need, but I wanted another opinion.

Any favorites out there, within the up to $60 price range?

I have a Bianchi Axis btw, so 700c size. Preferrably black in color.

I'm assuming your looking for a seatpost mounted rack that has braces for panniers, that is to say, there are no mounting points at the bottom of the triangle for a standard rack.

I have an Axiom Journey, and it works great. I bought it to solve two problems with my old rack. First, I had heel strike. The Journey is considerably longer behind the lower mounting points than my previous rack. Second, my old rack didn't want to fit above my new fenders. The Journey did so just fine.

I have the disc specific model. My bike doesn't have disc brakes (though the frame is disc capable), but it's what they had in stock and I wanted it that day. That RackTime AddIt looks nice. There is a Topeak rack that is also very popular here, though I can't remember the model (maybe more than one).

Does the Bianchi Axis have rack eyelets. From the website it appears that it does have upper eyelets and probably lower ones that are plugged. If you have eyets you can fit any std rack which is lighter, stiffer and stronger than a clamp-on style rack.
Get one with good triangulation, 3 legs, a rear lamp bracket. I prefer non-adjustable height and get the correct size to start with. If you panniers have good stiffeneing then you dont need the dogleg style. I prefer the top of the rack to be an open frame rather than top-plate so lashing larger loads is easy. I would also avoid proprietry rack fittings such as Topeak.
Black panniers show wear much more than silver ones.

It can be had with or without a spring, or there's a disc-compatible version (which I have) as well. Works very nicely for a trunkbag/pannier combo as the lower sidebar keeps the pannier mounting points out of the way. I paid ~$40 for mine.

Thanks for the replies.. Yes my Axis has eyelets. I currently have a rack and fenders on it. I am debating between the Cyvia and the Axiom Journey.

They do reorders regularly, and are pretty responsive to email.

I have the Axiom Odyssee on my bike. I like the adjustment capabilities of it.

I don't know what the best rack is, but I like my Jandd rack. They have pretty good panniers also.
