Headlite Bracket

I have seen some commuters with headlites mounted on the forks. Where the bolt hole is on top of the forks. Does anyone sell a bracket or headlite assembly for this purpose?
Suggestions please............:D

Where on the forks?

There are many different mounting options depending on the type of light you have. If it's a generator lamp, then you can hard-mount it to the fork crown with a bracket specifically for that purpose. I don't know of any crown mounting solutions for battery lights with typical bar-type mounts. But you can get something like the Minoura Fork Mount or Cronometro Nob which wraps around the fork blade and gives you a "bar sized" nub to mount stuff to.
If you have a hard-mountable lamp, you can do a mid-fork mount with a cateye light bracket, a long M4 bolt, some Presta valve knurled nuts as spacers and the spherical washers from a pair of brake shoes for adjustability. (I use that setup on one of my bikes.)
With mid-fork eyelets, you can get the Paul Gino and provide a mount point similar to the Minoura or Cronometro, but it's bolted right into an M5 threaded hole (like a rack or fender eyelet.)

Or you could probably make one with a couple of hose clamps and some PVC pipe.

I made one with a small piece of flat, galvanized steel bar stock bent to fit with a big pair of pliers. Drilled holes in each end. It bolts to the fork crown with an M5 30mm bolt.

Then I bolted a small flat piece of plastic with a cleat bolt and Nylock nut to the other end, laid some 'hard' Velcro on that, some 'soft' Velcro on the bottom of my light head, the wrapped a Velcro strap around the wholeassembly for safety. Works like a champ, pretty easy to remove.

I mount my light with hose clamps, but, I have had a problem. I mounted it on the handlebar, and when I hit bumps, the light would jiggle a bit. After some months, the clamp around the handlebar would break. Currently, I have a fork/handlebar configuration so that I can use TWO hose clamps. The light is UNDER the handlebar instead of above, and there is one clamp to hold the light to the handlebar, and another to hold it to the side of the stem. Looks dorky but works.

The fork crown is a good place to mount a lamp, it is out of the way, compatible with bar bags and gives good light distribution.
The mount needs to be very strong. Ive broken a couple, pressed-steel and plastic.
Lumotec Fly dynamo lamp comes with a very good steel rod mount for the fork crown
Ive made a few mounts which broke, they have to be very strong.
The best one was hewn from an old crankset and chainrings and was unbreakable.
Some cheapie chromed steel reflector mounts are excellent.

I have the minoura (fork-mounted bracket) I ordered from Harris cyclery, so I can at least give you my take on it: It works great and is very secure -- but a bit hard to feed the metal strap into the buckle to initially set it up. I run a cheap 2 AA flashlight with rechargable batteries for dark mornings, and soon to be dark evenings.

The light is attached to the minoura mount via the two-fish blocks:

All in all it works great. I've got one on my Surly and my wife's bianchi.

question for TurbineBlade- I don't quite understand how the minoura and the two-fish block works. I was actually more interested in mounting a headlight on my stem beneath my handlebars. I have a Surly LHT with their standard wide stem and handlebars. I just recently had interrupter brake levers installed and now have a very crowded handle bar. I can manage to mount the light on the handlebars if I must, but it is crowds my hand. I ride casually, but sometimes into twilight and early darkness and just for safety must throw the light on. I had not considered the fork mount- how does that work or do you or anyone out their have a recommendation for a stem mounted light? I may start a thread on this. thanks!

The Twofish mount can be mounted below the bar, but I think the strap will allow the light to wobble more unless it's very lightweight. I have seen lock blocks with parallel slots which would work on a stem, but they wouldn't allow for up/down adjustment. This is the method I prefer for using the standard lock block:

The type of bracket I am talking about attaches to the single bolt hole in the fork crown. I guess newer forks dont have them. Anyway this bracket attaches to this bolt hole and the light rides over the front tire.......

I like the supernova multimount a lot for mounting to the fork crown:

My favorite is the Paul Gino:

I have a touring bike with a fork that allows me to mount the Pauls mid-fork where the front racks are supposed to be mounted. The pauls are a great little accessory. I'm not very handy with making my own stuff, so I skip the PVC, hose clamp, duct tape method and just pay the money for a good product.

The Supernova multimount or some of the B&M mounts work well but all of those require a headlight with the under light mounting boss to attach to the multimount or B&M mounting bracket. The boss is pretty much universal on German dynamo headlights but I do not know of any American battery lights which have it.

For some headlights, this might work. I use it for my DIY halogen light. I think the 1 inch variety works best. Available at your local Ace Hardware for about $.75

Thats what I was looking for. Thank You......

Does anyone have good ideas for a frame mount? I'm considering having 2 lights, one that turns with the fork, but one that doesn't.

Topeak, Minoura, and probably others make bar extenders that mount to either the bars or the stem that allow you to add more goodies. Here's what Topeak has: http://topeak.com/products/Xtras/BarXtender.
