knickerbockers
Is anybody actually riding in pants like these?
|
I don't have those, but I have lycra knickers. They are great for cooler rides.
|
I have a pair of shorts that are almost like that. Much better than regular shorts.
|
i wear these everyday on my commute.
http://www.cutterbike.com/?p=165 super comfy for temperate weather and much better than shorts. bonus points for not having to roll up your pants and protecting your knees when you get taken out by the light rail tracks. |
Not yet, but I'm gonna have to figure something out quick as these temps start dropping around here.
|
|
I have a pair of lycra knickers and a pair of pants like the ones in the OP from mec in Vancouver. They both work well.
|
I saw a pair of wool Ibex knickers that looked like they would be really nice for winter commuting. However, $160 has kept me from pulling the trigger.

Rapha is a Posh brand, but they sell.

I have twp pairs of knickers that I made myself. Very easy to make. Just take some long pants, cut them below the knee and hem on a sewing machine. Knickers are my favorite pants to ride , I use them all year round in all wather conditions. I also have few other pairs that I bought. They can be expensive to buy, it's usually cheaper to make it yourself.

I ride in these. I also do just about everything else in them because I rarely wear anything else.
|
Got some "Italian Army" wool knickers and love them. Super cheap, too, at around $20 with shipping, I think. SpreeBbay or Geartrade is where I got them. Different site, but same basic knickers:

Nashbar C-Pants. I go to them as soon as it starts getting cool. I'm comfortable in them down to around 35F. I'm a little warm on the way home this time of year because it is swinging back up to around 80F.

Been riding Endura 3/4 Humvees almost year-round for the last two years. Pockets are in the perfect location and the length is just right to keep my knees warm in the office. Add tights and you can ride them all through winter. It does take a while to get past the manpri look but no worse than getting used to walking around in your tights/pantyhose.

Heh. |
Seriously, though -- as practical as these seem, I just can't imagine wearing them off the bike. Maybe I just need to touch base with my metro-sexual side, or something. |

It is not lost on me that the model in the photos is wearing pink socks ;-)

Back in Europe, I used to wear these type of pants all the time when hiking, but once I moved to the States I never saw pants like that. My (American) wife is ready to divorce me if I show up in them - 'boy capris' she calls them. Especially in combination with longer socks, they seem perfect for the colder season. I don't have the right attidude, it seems ("the who-gives-a-&%$#-attidude"), like this guy. :twitchy: |
This is my favorite style of pant. They are comfortable, you can ride whatever bike you want in them, in hot weather with sandals or in cold with an under layer, socks and boots!
I just wear them all the time now. I also fire spin and rock climb, and these are versatile and perfect for those activities too. I have 2 pairs of chrome shins knickers which were purchased at half price, and I love them both to the point that if they were still available, I'd buy another 2 at normal price. They are extremely comfortable, the material is super tough, comfy, water repellant and good looking. Chrome makes knickers now called the loop. I purchased a pair expecting something like the shins, and was heavily disappointed. The new material is thinner and flimsy feeling, the pockets are harder to comfortably pack things into, and the elastic at the pockets makes them unattractive. I don't recommend the new chrome knickers, personally. They don't look or feel as good at all. |
I have two pair by Oregon Cyclewear. Incredibly comfortable, stretchy material that doesn't hold moisture and a sewn in chamois...Love these. At 60 bucks, you can't beat 'em!!

They are as nice as they look. I picked up one pair at full price and then got two more for $40 each. Where I live it is rarely warm enough for shorter shorts, so I wear them quite a bit for inter-city rides.

As for wearing knickers, I wear them all year long, including winter. They're comfy and functional. I just put Ibex wool longjohns underneath when I go jogging in the winter. |

I wear my skinny jeans, but I roll up the right cuff so that I can fit in with all the hipsters.

Update to my previous post: I just ordered another pair of the Italian Army Mountain Wool knickers. I love them. Never figured myself for a knicker guy, but seeing them all over europe for the hiking set, I got to like the look. And heck, I already wear an Irish wool cap, so all I need now is to hike up my wool socks and hit the hills! I've happily rediscovered nature's miracle fabric.

Yep, I'm about as metro as you can get. I ride in a man tank (mank) all summer.
