Bad Weather commuting

Who likes bad weather commuting? I LOVE bad (Stormy) weather. Everything smells so fresh and cool. The big winds give me chills down my spine and a thrill of good things to come. My senses are suddenly awakened after being deadened by the musty heat of the summer.

I'm amazed at people who complain about a little bit of rain. I wish it snowed in the Bay Area

I enjoyed some rainy commutes when I had just gotten my rain cape. The newness has worn off now and I'd just as soon leave the cape in my bag. But I am digging the cool weather and and looking forward to some snowy commutes this winter. Upgrade-itis is kicking in for deep winter gear.

I don't mind light rain and I actually love to ride in light snow. However, I don't take a lot of pleasure in riding in heavy rain or snow especially if it includes strong wind. I still ride in it, but they're not my favorite commuting days.

+1. I rode in a huge wind/rain storm several weeks ago here in DC and it was the least fun I've had in the rain....and I've ridden in the rain many times. Rain itself isn't bad, 40-50 mph wind shear sucks.

I get a twisted pleasure out of being out in the nastiness but comfortable and muddling through. Like the Norwegians say, there's no bad weather, only bad clothes.

Not every day, mind you. But from time to time.

Most weather is fine, but there are a couple of things that just suck. 2, 3 or more inches of rain. Strong gusting headwinds. Hail (hurts like hell) or freezing rain.

Snow is so gentle it doesn't even compare to any of the above.

What clothing will help keep me upright in a 50mph crosswind? I have good gear for cold and wet, but I can't seem to dress for strong wind.

I'm looking forward to what this La Nina year brings. Hoping our area gets some snow.

Oh yea, the "look" is brilliant! It also shows those people who dive for their cars at the slightest hint of less than perfect weather, that humans can indeed survive out there!

Forecast calls for 4 straight days of rain here in LA, that means people in cars will be staying off the road! Time to clip on the fenders and ride free!

One thing about rainy weather that I've discovered. A poncho is more of a fashion statement than a rain keeping off device. Love the rain. I LOVE IT! My inner six-year old rides with reckless abandon through puddles giggling and screaming at the top off his lungs and shrieking with joy.

lucky lucky lucky... It's probably raining and 70-80 degrees... I spent a week in LA once. I biked 20 miles in the rain in shorts and a t-shirt and it was February

re: "dressing to stay upright in 50 mph wind"

haha good point not clothing is gonna help keep you upright. I almost got knocked down by a gusty crosswind last fall/winter during a torrential rainstorm!

Personally I can't say I enjoy bad weather, but it also doesn't bother me much. I do prefer a mild summer morning though.

That's the great thing about my job: I'm paid to get dirty, sweaty, wet, covered in sewage, bruised, buried, shocked, cut, cold, and in general, treated poorly by the rest of the people I work with. What's a little rain?

Bring it.

I have a 14 mile commute and IMO, no matter how well dressed I am for miserable wet and/or cold weather, the first ten miles will be tolerable, and then I endure the rest.

I often note that many extreme cold weather cyclists do not give their mileage unless requested.

I love the rain. I wish it would rain more often here. Wind and lightning are not really my friends, though. Fun to watch, but not fun to ride in.
