I suppose I should have posted when I 'solved' my problem :-) My LBS managed to squeeze an incredibell on the bar, by slightly shifting the grip tape, as far as I can tell. They were also cheaper than anyplace else I shopped for bells ($5.25, no shipping, and free install)

It works just fine for me, as I'm mostly using it to attempt to make pedestrians on the MUP notice me BEFORE I'm right on top of them. That said, I'm a bit judicious in using it, as I've learned that people react in weird ways. A couple of nights ago, a gaggle of pedestrians was walking about 5 abreast (and about 3-4 deep) on the Washington monument grounds, and I had to decide whether to bell them or not. I decided not to, but I'm guessing that was the wrong decision. I scooted around them easily enough, but after I passed, one of the 'moms' started yelling "Better move over dad... its a bike. Better move dad." I was about 10 feet beyond the farthest person in their group when she started yelling. Oh, and this was after dark, I was running lights front and rear, and passed at a very moderate speed.

Anywhooo... when my incredibell fails, I think I'll look at the Brass Hammer bell options, given the mounting flexibility.

the incredi-bell is nice (i have two installed on my other bikes) but the long loud ring of a brass bell with hammer is a lot better for dealing with NYC pedestrians.

i have my incredi-bell installed on my road bike because i like the weight savings... just like this... but I'm going to switch it out to a stem mounted brass bell with hammer for safety's sake.

it just doesn't scatter/warn the masses as well as my brass bell with hammer.

I like my Rivendell Japanese bell because it looks good and is loud.

Most of the shops around here that I've seen have Incredibell's Adjustabell on hand.

Shoot, I might still have one sitting around somewhere. I switched to their Road Bell when I converted the commuter to drops:
