Stay off my MUP and you won't have a problem, because I'm not changing my ways.

The only time I've ridden with a flashing front I had to stop to get a stick to put between my teeth so I wouldn't swallow my tongue while I tried to figure out how to turn it off. I hated it. Can't even ponder HAVING a flashing headlight, and have no idea how others can stand it. As far as meeting up with those blinking folks instead of being one, it bugs me a bit but we're past each other fast enough that I don't much care.

I do have issues with the high-aimed retina searers and the helment-mounted light wearers who feel compelled to stare at you, as they are downright infringing on me (and it is, of course, all about me). But for the rest of the menagerie, c'est la vie, free world, I may not fathom how you can want to do what you're doing, but carry on.

I always run a sold light AND a blinking light. The problem with just a blinking light is that it give no indication of speed or direction. That's useful information for other bikes and motorists to know.

My sold light might be as bright as I need it for seeing on a dark, unlit road. My blinking light is a 1/2 watt cateye.

I would NEVER put anything bigger than a half-watt light on my helmet. My bars generally remain pointed at the road. But my head goes all over the place. I often look direct at motorists. The last thing I want to do is blind them.

I usually keep my tail light off while on the MUP. Not so with my helmet (or bar) light(s). I was once impressed with a very bright light coming off a bike approaching from the opposite direction. It turned out to be a reflector :)

The point is to be seen at night. I run a minewt mini on the bars and the helmet. I love the look on the drivers faces when they SEE me and stop. I don't have a flash mode but sometimes I wave my finger in front of my my bar light to make it sort of blink, would that help?

I think what the "I don't care how much my flashing blinkie annoys you, I'm not changing" crowd risks is that sooner or later they are going to irritate some politician (or someone who knows a politician) and you will then see some legislation regulating the lights you can put on your bike. There are already such regulations in Europe and the more outrageous the behavior becomes the more likely it is this will happen in North America too, and when it does it will be a major PIA for everyone since they will undoubtedly over-regulate in reaction. When that happens we know who to blame ...

I tend to keep my blinkies going on the MUP, but I aim my headlight down to not blind anyone. I feel it helps with the many other cyclists as well as the runners. I run as well, and find that being able to see the blinkies on bikes helps me to be more aware of their presence - especially if I'm in a 'groove' while in the midst of my run. I don't understand the OP's angst, perhaps too many folks with bright blinkies aimed too high?

I've never been blinded by a red blinky. I'm thinking that some people are just too sensitive.
