Pedals: Time atac Z or Eggbeater Mallets?
 

Has anyone been using these pedals for commuting or general purpose, around-town riding? I love the idea of being able to use clipless pedals for longer recreational rides while also having the option of hopping on with my scuffer shoes for a quick trip to the store or to pick up the kids at school (trailer!...small kids) ALL WITH ONE PEDAL! I know the two-sided SPD pedals (345's? with cage on one side and spd pedal on the other) have been around for some time but I like the idea of not having to flip the pedal over regardless of which shoes I'm sporting. These pedals seem to be designed for downhillers or technical dirt-dwellers but the concept seems perfect for a utility/sport/mostly-road rider like me. I like my Mallets in any situation I have had them in. Right now they are on my singlespeed but used to be on my commuter (when I had one), for freeride and trails on my MTB's, and when I was using shoes on my roadbike. Very nice quality so far.

Ditto. I love my mallets. If you use your commuter as a utility vehicle as well, then you will find them very useful for those plain shoes grocery runs.

Plus, the eggbeater design is IMO flawless.

For the Mallets: If wearing street shoes do you have to press down to "submerge" the egg beater in order to make full contact with the flat pedal? It seems from looking at the pics (I haven't seen any in person) that the egg beater sticks up a little above the platform and would act as a pivot point allowing contact with the front or back but not the entire pedal unless pushed out of the way somehow.

Go with the Time Atac Z. They're easy in and out and give a very positive feel when you click in. The platforms work well too for the quick trip to the market with street shoes.

Thanks fot the input. Two folks for the Mallets and two for the Time Z's. I wish I could have gotten both. I went for the Mallets because they were to be had a little cheaper and because it seems they may be more comfortable when used as a platform with street shoes. In the future, if I decide to go to a plain clipless pedal over the platform type, I think I will try a pair of ATACs.
