I assumed this to be true, and that is part of the project. Either shorter or longer, I know that several people will commute via a different route on the bicycle verse a car(or whatever).

But to be honest, I expected I would get somewhat higher results of people having a shorter commute time on bicycle, from downtown type folk. Maybe they just aren't online tonight.

One thing that isn't accounted for in my commute time is that if I leave late by car and need to find parking, that can easily burn an extra 10 minutes. I don't usually leave late, though.

Here's the way I look at it though:
30 minutes in a car is 30 minutes lost doing something I don't like.
50 minutes on a bike is 50 minutes gained doing something I do like that's also good for me.
So when I bike I get 80 more minutes of productivity out of the day.

I don't ever commute by car. I do use the bus though.

To work...
Bicycle - Bus
---------------
30 min - 45 min

Home (more uphill)
------------------
40 min - 1 hour (takes a different route at night)

As you can see for me taking a bicycle is faster, even in the winter.

If I had to take a guess I would think commuting by car would take about 15-20 min, depending on traffic.

1.6 mile commute one way
3-5 min by car
5-7 min by cycle

I deal with a pretty extreme grade change, but it's about the same both directions.

Current commute is on foot, 4 blocks - bike is useless for that short of a commute.
Prior commute was 12 miles (20km) each way, predominantly downhill in the morning, uphill after work. 30-35 minutes in the morning, 40-60 minutes in the evening depending on mood and freshness.

For shorter commutes I have found that I can make better time on my bike than I could with my car... my old 13km commute could be done in 25 minutes by bike while taking the car could take at least this long or longer due to shorter and straighter bike route.

My long commute (50km one way) is a little over 2 hours by bike and would take me 35 minutes by car.

Weather is a factor and with winter upon us I will be using the car for the long commute.

My 8 km commute to the bike shop takes me 20 minutes in normal weather and again... driving this distance could take just as long or longer depending on traffic as I have a superior bike route.
