There is a great reflective tape sold by MoCo, Inc. in Oregon--

http://www.peak.org/~moco/

Distributors of ReflexiteŽ Retro-Reflective Materials Conspicuity Tape
used by truck drivers... easy pre-stick cleaning compaired with 3M suggestions, and very very bright!

2" width makes for easy attachment and increased visibilty..

AND they sell by the foot! at 2" you should not need more that 20 feet to turn your bike into a virtual 'light sabor' visible from a football field away and more... it works great in Iowa conditions where there are no bike lanes in the main city of Des Moines and no shoulders on most of the roads!!!

CHEAP too:
$1.25 per foot per October 2004:
MC-V82-5449-0 - Solid Silver/White, 2" width. Order by the foot.

fast and friendly delivery too (they even sent me several yards of free blue reflective tape!!)

They do not use glass beads but an all-weather functional reflective prism system (47,000 microprisms per square inch) Test a piece besides 3M's product at different distances... this IS the best tape for visibilty and cost.

They also sell sewable tape but only by the roll I believe.... though maybe you could contact them about a per-foot purchase??

Good wishes,

Robert the Bike!

Any opinions on 3M's SOLAS (Save Our Lives At Sea) tape? It looks quite bright on the pics that Ebay sellers post.

Sewable reflective tape is in. 50 ft lime (thought they say yellow) Reflexite. 25 ft silver 3M Retro Reflective. Both 2" wide. Please email me with exactly how much you want and address to which to mail. I will start mailing Monday. Total cost for 75 ft was US$69.22, rounded to $1.10/ft plus postage. I will let you know exact postage amount based on how much you want. I will let you know when mailed, and you can send pmt via PayPal to my regular email address or send a check. Feel free to wait until you receive before paying.
Regards,
Raymond

SOLAS is the name an international treaty and stands for Safety Of Life At Sea.

The stuff slides around, so it's good to tack it down with a glue stick or something and then stitch (by machine or by hand).

Just finished adding the Reflexite on a backpack and making a reflective waist sash to go over the darker colored jerseys. The stuff is very easy to cut and stitch on.

-- I just received an order of this 3M Heat-Transfer (iron-on) Retro-Reflective tape:

--I ironed two strips onto my Pearl Izumi windbreaker and it works great.

Here's a pic of my first road frame (a touch too small for me), I cut sections of the "diamond" type reflective tape and had them on bits of the frame. As this tape is not very flexible, I used clear over th esections to keep them from falling off. I did'n't have any left over for my new frame, but I feel comfortable with my wearable reflective bits (leg bands, gloves, sash). I still use wider sections, taped together as reflectors on some of my wheels.
