rain problem solved!
 

I hated riding in the rain with water dripping through my helmet. I didn't care if my head warmed up but rain was starting to suck. I went to my LBS and inquired about helmet covers. He told me they were seasonal. Uh.....IT' RAINING RIGHT NOW! So I hit the source of all info, the net. people mentioned shower caps and these plastic dish cover thingies. I pulled out my mule and hit the streets. Here we go.

shower cap was awesome. I got this light blue one at target with flowers on it. You can't see the flowers once it's on your head and wet. even dry.

I also bought a box of covermate stretch to fit food covers. also at target. There are 2 HUGE ONEs, 4 large ones and 4 medium ones. The medium ones are useless (so far) the large ones are perfect for my helmet and the x-tra large ones would work but are a bit too big. But will be great on my seat to keep it dry.

I am stoked! out in the rain! =D

You can buy a shower cap that will also do the job.

Only thing I dislike about these is that after wearing a helmet cover, your hair looks like you just came out of the shower. If it's at all cool, I wear a thin fleece cap or my balaclava under my helmet. That actually seems to keep my head drier.

Yeah, my first helmet cover was a shower cap w/a bunch of flowers on it. Only they were 3D rubber ones not a pattern. Kind of like a fright wig. It was fun for the first winter I rode. Then I got sophisticated...I miss those days, sometimes. :)

Still using a cover Nash or how did you sophisticate it?

Maybe I should mention that I'm in Los Angeles and it doesn't really rain too often or get cold enough for all that warmth. On the coldest day I thought I'd need some warmth and gave up on that in mile 1. I maybe use my covers once every 2 weeks when the weather is at it's worst. I pull thee covers out with my cut off rain pants and roll. It's raining like hell this week for Socal. 6 days of rain in a row! And then it will only probably drizzle a little here and there. with a low of 51. far from freezing.

I've had pretty good luck with just a Headsweats in the rain. Maybe it's because I'm on the road for an hour at a time, but it's as if the cover and band soaks up a lot of rain water. Coupled with evaporation (since it's a breathable material), I get very little water actually running down my face/neck.

sugoi make a nice helmet cover that is bright yellow, windproof, and somewhat water-resistant. i wear it all the time unless really warm

You could try waterproofing your helmet.

Well, that was in 1987. My 1st year cycle-commuting and I was flat broke. It was a thirftstore find as was my helmet. Anyway, my sophistiation came in the way of finding out about helmet covers from an lbs. I rolled in w/my flowers flopping and a guy behind the counter offered my an inexpensive HC at cost, so I bought it. Now I've got 2. One's a Nashbar rubberized black and the other's a J&G rain cover in yellow. I use the Nashbar most of the time, but will use the J&G on grey, drizzly, rainy days for added visibilty.

What about an umbrella?

I had one of those pvc 3pc rain outfits from Kmart that I bought ages ago for camping with my son as a just in case piece of kit. The hood, under the helmet, has worked fairly well keeping me dry. Not a tight fit & actually lets air thru. I can turn up the back of it & it channels the rain out over my shoulders & keeps it from running down my back.

Wow! One of those bright yellow rain deals? I would imagine sweat and steam. I might try that out. This year in Cali the rain is horrendous. I put my bike on blocks while I wait out the cold. The rain was fine but I am not built for 39 degrees. Gimme a week to ease into it and I might be rolling again by tuesday.

lol, you know if you wanted an actual helmet cover...you could go online and order one, right? :D

Somehow, I get this visual of Klinger (from M*A*S*H, remember that show?) on a bike--flower shower cap, chenille bathrobe and pink bunny slippers (clipless)--with an umbrella.
