Leisesturm, That is some kind of mirror. Easily the largest helmet mounted mirror I have ever heard of.
|
Try your existing mirror above your glasses and turned outward horizontally, instead of your current position below the lens and vertical. That's where I have mine.
When I'm wearing an unzipped jacket, the wind puffs up the shoulders, and then my rear vision is blocked. That's probably similar to your problem. I have to sit up a bit to use the mirror. |
I currently use the EfficientVelo mirror that Leisesturm linked and am happy with it. I didn't use the zip ties either, went with super strong double-sided tape stuff. It is a huge mirror (for something mounted that close in) but you don't notice it and what I like about it is that it can be positioned to "clear your shoulder" when you're in your riding position. I have the same flexibility issues as the OP and cannot effectively look over my shoulder. It's not convex, so the image in mirror doesn't get lost after fifty feet back as the German mirror did.

I think I'm going with a one-two-punch solution here. I think I'm going to score a set of bar-end mirrors, and I'm going to go with a helmet mount mirror. The helmet mount may, in the end, I think, be the best solution. It will get the mirror up a little higher than my present eyeglass mount, and I won't have to fool around with installing and removing them from my glasses. Also switching from clear to sunglasses will be easier. I also have a set of Wiley-X wrap-around glasses with a prescription insert that are difficult to mount the eyeglass-mount mirror that I presently use - a Take-A-Look, so the helmet mount will get around that.
When I first started riding I had a lot of trouble adopting some of these "dorky" seeming things like eyeglass-mounted mirrors. After several years now, I've learned to embrace my inner Fred! |

Made by an old feller, out of recycled bike spokes and other reused stuff. It wedges onto the helmet and adjusts depending upon the angle. I like the "Take a Look" mirror too... but at night or on dim winter days when I don't wear sunglasses, it's not useable. we carry them with a bunch of unique graphics as shown https://www.signmeup.com/Upload/File...-withlabel.jpg |
I ordered the Ultra Light Bike Mirror from Rivendell. They call it the German Mirror. It looks like it'll work out, get back to you after I try it.

I have a bar end mirror but am interested in getting a helmet mounted one. However I have read some reviews that say the mirror can block your view of the road ahead. Has anyone experienced this - or is it just a case of poor mounting?
Thanks Daven |

FWIW I modified a Third Eye eyeglasses mirror that is widely available. I modified it in two ways as you can see in the picture. First I cut off the three prongs used to attach it to the eyeglasses and replaced those with two zip ties. The zip ties are re-used, you just slip them onto the temple and insert the third eye. This holds the apparatus in place much better than the prongs. The Third eye joints also tends to loosen and come out of adjustment. I fixed that by epoxying the joints once it was adjusted to where I like it. I've used this system for a number of years and found that it works very well for me. I prefer it to helmet mirrors and it is very adaptable. I have several sets of zip ties to use with different glasses with different shape temples.

Hey, tpelle, something doesn't look right with that mirror in the photo.
I have the same mirror, but the glass is oriented in a different way. You might try what someone suggested earlier in this thread before you bail on it. If that's a Take-A-Look, that's the favorite of many a rider. |
I really like the Take-a-Look mirror. I wear glasses and have angled it upwards a few degrees and keep it positioned in the L shape from my ear out to just above my shoulder. Five years now with the same mirror. It's really nice to find a product that does what it's supposed to do and is reasonably priced.
