Is it possible to sharpen the studs? I would think they would wear down quickly (with any pavement contact) and as rider/bike don't weigh that much when you consider hard ice.

You could carry and ice axe to self arrest :-) Maybe crampons... I can almost imagine fabricating some peddals to attach to my crampons... ok, maybe not

We're having great weather, but it's hard to dress for. Temps were in the mid-30s F when I left home, but it's supposed to warm up to mid-60s by afternoon, plus there is a chance of afternoon showers. I finally decided to put a spare bag on my front rack and carry and extra long-sleeve jersey and t-shirt. My rain jacket is very warm, so it's great for riding in the 30s, but not so nice when it's warm outside.

Seemed buttery smooth until the last mile. I was overdressed, and a bit warm, but that's no surprise in this kind of weather. Should have left the middleweight fleece in the pannier. Rode the latest project bike, a late 90s Kona NuNu that I picked up as an orpham, and my LBS had me up and riding like new for $60 thanks to the winter half price labor special.

She was a great choice for the muddy, rutty tow path, though a front fender might be in order -- I'm wearing a bit of the path. I could make much better speed than I'm comfortable with on my Dew Drop. A bit slower on the paved path and roads, but not enough to significantly impact my overall time. Great over broken pavement, hopping off curbs, etc.

Anyway, my riding reverie was shattered when I was turning from Constitution (a 3 lane in each direction, main artery) onto Louisiana (a 2 lane in each direction major road) -- I was in the right lane, and needed to get over. I looked, noted a gap of substantial size, signaled and started over. The cage behind me took that opportunity to speed up and attempt to close the gap before I took it... I elected to signal again and keep going, as I needed over at this point. She then swerved into the next lane (again, rather than slowing, like she should have!) causing another motorist to have to brake hard. He then proceeds to yell at ME! I don't think he saw my first signal, because he seemed to think I had signaled and shot right over (I didn't!) but I'm not sure it mattered -- he was sure that all bicyclists in the city are jerks who don't care about motorists. Unfortunately, I don't think I did anything to dissuade him as he called me names like "M#(%#$FU#%$R" -- I did not return his style of rhetoric. It spoiled the last few minutes of my commute, though I am replaying to see if a) he had a valid point and b) what I could have reasonably done differently (besides get on the sidewalk and walk my bike at every intersection... NOT!)

***Obviously one thing I could have done differently was not push my 'right of way' and waited for another hole in traffic...

30f Nice morning windy as heck but it wasn't a full on headwind so not bad, weatherman said we would wake up to a couple inches of white stuff which was a complete lie. The transportation dept. believed them though and went crazy laying down deicer.

61F w/ drizzle,not too shabby. I've been getting more flats than usual and I don't trust my tires on wet roads at all. I took performance up on their deal of the day today and orderred two of their Michelin Erilium 2 Road Tires for $9.99 each.

Had my fastest commute yet, averaged 15.2MPH over 8.5 miles (my short route). Weather was perfect.

dude... only 2 below this morning, but we had what felt like 30 mph winds (at least) out of the south/sw. Of course that is the direction I was trying to go. somewhat less than entertaining this morning...

But I think I am becoming one of those annoyingly chipper a-holes, because I actually enjoyed the ride. I laughed pretty hard when I was standing waiting for a light and almost fell down because my right foot was still clipped in with my left on the pavement when there was a sudden gust that almost blew me over to my right. I havent ever fallen because of my clipless pedals even with lots of panic stops, but then standing at a light I almost get blown over?

30 this morning for the ride in, but my legs are sensing the impening arrival of spring, I think. A little more pep in my cycling yesterday and today. This morning's commute, aided by a slight tailwind was the fastest commute I've had in a couple months. Supposed to be around 50 for the ride home, but possibly rainy with showers moving in for tonight and tomorrow AM. With the warmer temps I'll be shedding my tights and fleece going with just shorts and a long sleeve tee. If it hasn't started raining too hard yet, tonight's ride home should be real nice. :D

looked at the weather app on the phone and thought I saw the temp reported at 34F. Perfect I think, no baclava and no wind pants. As soon as I got up to speed and my eyes started watering I knew I had made a mistake. 22F, and the tops of my thighs and ears are just starting to defrost. Tolerable for 15 minutes, but could have been more enjoyable. First ride since the tune up on monday from the LBS. Like buttah. At least compared to before.

Yesterdays commute home was excellent, I nailed the tire pressure, only a little tire slippage on the steep icy climbs in the trails but pretty easy on the pavement. Watched a tow truck driver rush a yellow light and then run over the canopy that came off the pickup he was towing. That was worth a laugh.

This morning was getting cold again, -3C/26F. I might need to buy a new balaclava if this keeps up. Still no ice on the way in though.

22f and virtually no wind. Felt much colder, though. I could feel the cold air coming through my jacket's zipper. Gotta wonder why companies don't put draft flaps on their full-zip winter cycling garments.

Arrg, for various reasons I've had to drive all week... I'm dying inside... :(

Whiteout, pretty fun. 4" by the time I got in, major snowpocalypse for these parts. Usually when it's snowing like this I can't ride because school is closed and I wind up staying w/ the kids. Between a meeting that is happening whether or not my office closes, and the fact that they didn't close school until after I left, here I am.

Little over 8 miles on the visit to the Doc. Was just warm enough for shorts full gloves and a light jacket. Rode my Beater Trek 420 since I had to lock it to sign in a flower bed due to LACK OF BIKE RACKS AT KAISER OFFICES. They only pimp the healthy lifestyle thing on the ads. They dont support it at their offices. Even my doc was a bit down of riding on the streets but more then happy to put me on more drugs then support me on my attempt to be off more drugs. :rolleyes:

Oh man, I've had a couple of those moments. But more often it's the cars just not paying any attention...it does shatter the zen of the ride.

Quiet cool ride in this am. My brake pad project is tonight, picked up two setsb at the bike shop in the way home. Was all front brake coming in this morning.

Good to be back on the bike today. Enjoyed the commute. I'm with EKW, will shed a few layers for the ride home. High 20's on the way in, should be in the high 40's on the way home. Hopefully the rain holds off until tonight after the ride. On the bright side, maybe the rain will wash out the few icy patches that are left on the W&OD west of Tysons. Killed my momentum several times this morning to slow down and cross them.

27 when I left house, about 1.5 - 2" of snow in my area. Some wind blowing from the north. Icy/snow side streets but flatter main streets were pretty good. I had to stop once to pick up a $20 bill that was covered with ice...which made it all worth it. The next stop was about 1/2 way to work to warm up my hands. Winter gloves + liners were not keeping my hands warm after lots of downhills into the wind. Once I arrived downtown the streets were dry and I was toasty. Went from needing Mtn bike to not needing it. Then on way home it's going to be colder and I'll need Mtn bike for going back up hills. I doubt it'll snow another 1-2" like they are predicting. It is keeping drivers off the road though which is excellent. :D

No precip this morning. Rode comfortably in my office clothes of dress pants, button down shirt, and v-neck sweater. Going to be colder and wetter on the way home, so I brought my winter riding clothes in my back pack.

Tomorrow's forecast just keeps getting more and more fun! :)

packed all the snow gear for a possible snow storm on the way home today, ride is was easy as it was nice and warm. On the way home serious headwind with blowing snow and cold, temp is supposed to drop and we are supposed to get 1-2 feet, snow day maybe tomorrow? I sure hope not.

I just replaced mine tonight, they weren't quite as bad off as yours!

Temps here are in the 70's... wind was killer today. Averaged 15.2 MPH going to work, barely averaged 10MPH coming back. I took my "medium" route, which turned out badly... they had just graded the gravel road and there were no smooth tire tracks for me to ride in. When I got home, I had to tighten everything on the bike back up. Just about rattled my teeth out. Oh well.

Homeward bound we had what my daughter calls "snailshine" - snow, hail, and sunshine all at once.
