Bicyclists in the snow on TV

This morning, the TV news had a correspondent out on the streets talking about the snow and how dangerous the streets were. Just then a bicyclist went by him!

Unfortunately, the cyclist was a salmon.

One of my finer moments was when I was riding in to work at about 7:00 AM, the temp was -10*F (without wind chill). I stopped to tell some kids waiting for the bus that school was canceled "because it was too cold to wait for the bus". (they draw the line at 0*F, especially if there's significant wind).

Great! More bad press, even if subtle.
I wonder how many folks registered the cyclist but did not "get" the salmon part.

Sounds like you were watching a commercial.

Notice all of the random bikes going buy in commercials? I think it represents a healthy community to people who create add campaigns -- even for car companies. I really doubt the cyclist registered with anyone but those who cycle.

It always seems to me that salmon are people who have no alternative but riding a bike (I assume most of us could drive if we wished) and are riding a Next full-suspension rig with the seat way too low.

Reporters from a local news station frequently broadcast from a busy street corner nearby. A few years ago, after a blizzard, on a bet with my wife, I rode by there intentionally to see if they would interview me. They took the bait, and I did appear on TV. In the interview, I explained that I had been riding in the snow for decades, was having a lot of fun, and it really wasn't all that dangerous. There were basically no cars on the road, btw. By the time the interview aired, that had heavily edited the interview to make it appear as if I was a complete fool, warned viewers what I was doing was extremely hazardous, and advised everyone to stay indoors. Fools.

We've got a lot of extra TV coverage in town for the Super Bowl. I'm hoping our Critical Mass will show up on TV. No snow of course, it's supposed to hit 60 here tomorrow.

I'd guess that no one but a cyclist would have even noticed the bicyclist. Heck, many motorists can't even see cyclists when they are sharing the street with them.
