Reflective tape
Where can I buy yellow fluorescent tape for my bike and helmet?
I've tried a few LBS but they have small packages of four, 6" strips for $8-$10. Same at REI. Hardware and auto supply stores have small packages of silver tape.
Got any other suggestions other than on-line or mail order? Thanks.

You can get the really good stuff by 3M at auto parts stores.
The kind you want is thin and whitish-silvery in color.
To be correct, it is not flourescent, it is reflective.

Ron,
I picked up sheets of 3M Scotchlite in different colors, including bright yellow, from a sign making supply store. I'm pretty sure it was less than $5/sq ft.
Regards,
Raymond

Do a google search on motorcyce safety or something. I buy mine from a motorcycle website. I can't recall the URL though.

I got my reflective tapes from Home Depot (the Yellow & Black stripped), a single roll for $ 3.50, I've placed them on the seat stays, the back of my helmet, on the rear fender and some visible parts of the frame.
They also sell these little blinking red lights (safety strobes) for 1.99 each, I put them on the straps behind my helmet.

Bike South has a sheet (4"x10") of reflective shapes in various colors for about $5. I have bought two sheets and they work well--on fenders, frame, or helmets. I called Hancock Fabrics yesterday about reflective cloth tape you can sew on clothing, but they are sold out because of Halloween. (I'm going back after Halloween!) I have seen a pack of silver/red reflective tape for use on semi-trailers at Walmart for about $10.

Reflective tape comes in many styles such as 3M. There is a great reflective tape sold by MoCo, Inc. in Oregon--
https://www.peak.org/~moco/
Distributors of ReflexiteŽ Retro-Reflective Materials Conspicuity Tape
used by truck drivers... easy pre-stick cleaning compaired with 3M suggestions, and very very bright!
2" width makes for easy attachment and increased visibilty..
AND they sell by the foot! at 2" you should not need more that 20 feet to turn your bike into a virtual 'light sabor' visible from a football field away and more... it works great in Iowa conditions where there are no bike lanes in the main city of Des Moines and no shoulders on most of the roads!!!
CHEAP too:
$1.25 per foot per October 2004:
MC-V82-5449-0 - Solid Silver/White, 2" width. Order by the foot.
fast and friendly delivery too (they even sent me several yards of free blue reflective tape!!)
They do not use glass beads but an all-weather functional reflective prism system (47,000 microprisms per square inch) Test a piece besides 3M's product at different distances... this IS the best tape for visibilty and cost.
Good wishes,
Robert the Bike!
