Over 20 miles each way

How many people commute 20 or more miles each way?

I did last year, 22 miles each way. I only did it twice a week though. I just got mentally burned out if I did it more than that.

I go as much as 46 miles each way. Luckily I can catch a bus 9 miles from home and ride it the rest of the way to work so my normal bicycling commute would only total about 22 miles (if I take a different way home).

...maybe that's not what you meant.

My commute before I got laid off was 21 each way w/a 500 ft drop in elevation workward and 500 ft climb on the way home. It can get to be a grind...not the cycling, but all the other ancillary stuff like changing clothes, bring food, etc. Whenever I'd get burned out I'd take a day off or two. Averaged 120-250 mpwk for 4 years. Single speed and fixed gear kept it interesting and made me a much stronger cyclist. Plenty of rest, eating well all contribute to being able to sustain the pace.

It sure eats up a bunch of hours out of the day. I have to keep telling myself that if not for riding I would have to be finding a place to run, changing, and all that.

My commute is just over 20 miles each way but I only started last month and I'll be happy if I can do it once a week on average.

That sounds like the perfect distance... depending on riding conditions. My commute is 7 miles of nearly perfect conditions (90 percent on a sparsely used new MUP.) If my commute were 20 miles with the current conditions I have, it would be perfect. At 13-15 mph that would be 75-90 minutes.

I wouldn't enjoy a 20 mile commute on a crowded road; shoulder full of glass, gravel, etc.; lots of traffic signals; and lousy weather.

I do around 19 miles each way, I've found that much more than this would be too much to work the 13 hour shifts that I do and still be well-rested enough to be safe at work. (I'm an RN, so it's kind of important for me to be mentally alert for the work I do). I just started this routine a few months ago, and at first I would sporadically drive to work, but for almost the past month I've managed to commute by bicycle every day, except for one day I accepted an offer of dinner out and a ride home from a friend after work. It's not always easy, there are some days when I just wish I could be home without any effort, especially when the weather is lousy, or when I'm just starting a string of several 13 hour shifts in a row. But I've found that, if I drive my car to work for a day or two, I just feel more tired and out of balance, so I keep riding.

The ideal commute for me would be 10-15 miles, but finding a decent place out in the country that is that distance from work is not easy (Heck, I'm lucky to have found the place I have now). During the spring last year, I commuted 10 miles to College classes and that was about the ideal distance.
