Fell off bike getting started on commute home.

Broke 2 ribs, collar bone and collapsed lung. am so embarrassed. Hospitalized for 10 days with the collapsed lung and had plate for collar bone put in. Am home but will be a few more days before I go back to work. I am so sore. Then 8 weeks no ride, exercise, flying, scuba a or jungles. not a problem there I think.

All I did was mount the bike, the chain hung up next thing I know lost control of bike and over I went. Oh well. Could have been worse. This happened in loading dock area of hospital where I work. all in a blink of an eye. Be careful out there.

I am on the mend but not happy to be in this position much rather be out riding in all this lovely 60+ weather we are going to be having.

bikegeek57 02-12-11 09:00 AM

Forgot to mention. emergency service had to cut all my riding clothes off including shoes. Total loss. :-(

Cyclaholic 02-12-11 09:25 AM

Oh man, that sux! :(
...look on the bright side, at least you saved yourself an ambulance ride :)

buzzbee 02-12-11 09:41 AM

Yikes, I hope you feel better and get back in the saddle soon.
So far, I've avoided those bad injuries but have had a lot of scrapes. I'm much more cautious now than I was 10 years ago.

10 Wheels 02-12-11 09:48 AM

So Sorry to hear this...heal Fast.

Cyclaholic 02-12-11 09:57 AM

Is the bike OK?

Titmawz 02-12-11 10:17 AM

thats a damn shame =\ get well soon !

Henry III 02-12-11 10:25 AM

I had to chuckle as it's not really funny but that it happened right at the hospital. Get better soon!

ZmanKC 02-12-11 10:25 AM

Ouch. Heal quickly.

clayton c 02-12-11 11:03 AM

Yep. That's when you generally get clobbered - when you are mounting/dismounting or just riding along enjoying the scenery. So don't be too embarrassed about it. I have a personal list of goofy falls like that, just never right in front of a hospital. Everybody thinks one day I am going to get smashed riding like an @$$ in traffic, but it's when a rider is not particularly focused, or riding slow, that they are most at risk for freak accidents.

Heal up Man! Spring is on the way. Sorry you gotta go thru that.

whats funny about the location. the hospital is not considered a Trauma Center. Ambulance hauled my sorry butt across the city to one of the two designated Trauma Centers. Even though my hospital has an ER. go figure. found the bike. one of the transportation/parking executives heard about it and picked up the bike and secured it in her office. will need new front wheel. not a clue how that got warped in the process. must have been it's time to go? will be a few weeks before I get any type of clearance on next step. I am thinking new bike... :-) course that might be the drugs talking....

Good grief. At least you made it through the crappiest part of the winter, you wouldn't want to have missed that.

Here's hoping you heal fast.

Let me understand, you mounted the bike, and started moving and then you fell? How fast were you going? Or were you just mounting the bike and fell over at a standstill. That seems like some serious injuries for a lowspeed impact??

Best wishes for a quick recovery. Hope you'll be in the saddle real soon again.

exile 02-12-11 12:33 PM

Hope you have medical insurance. It would suck to work at a hospital and not have any coverage.

Aloe 02-12-11 12:55 PM

Wait, so you fell off the loading dock?

I fell off my bike about 4 days ago because someone was pulling over to parallel park - didn't see me I'm assuming even though I was right next to him - and I rode up on some ice with fresh snow on it so the bike shot out from under me. All i have, though, is a bruised hip, which is nothing to complain about in light of your situation.

Get well soon.

scroca 02-12-11 06:08 PM

Yikes. What a price to pay.

But I don't get what happened to the chain that caused this. What did it get hung up on? And how far did you fall to sustain all those injuries, all the way off the loading dock?

At any rate, I hope you heal up quick.

longbeachgary 02-12-11 06:13 PM

Last week we had a guy go off the side of Glendora Mountain Road and rolled down 250 feet to the canyon below! He has his cell phone and dialed 911 and was rescued. He didn't have half the injuries that you have from falling over from a dead stop. Go figure.

rex_kramer 02-12-11 07:14 PM

Wow! Reading that made me cringe. But I'm glad you're on the mend. Prayers for a quick recovery.

bikegeek57 02-13-11 06:15 AM

My recollection was the chain hung on FD. Happens on this cheaper bike from time to time. had maybe rotated crank once so was very low speed. What happened to front wheel I have no idea. There is a sharp curb drop off of an inch or two that I might have hit at that moment? Suspect it must have taco'd front wheel causing bike to stop abruptly? Have no memory of what happened immediately. Thank god for helmets. The loading dock area is fairly big. I was passing through on my way out. Am feeling better everyday but am still not 100% ready to go back to work. Ugh.

earth2pete 02-13-11 07:45 AM

bikegeek, so sorry about your accident. hang in there until sunny days come back again!

also, i hope it doesn't hurt too much, hope you heal up well and quickly! in the mean time, enjoy yourself as much as possible...

atbman 02-13-11 07:55 AM

Not intending to rub it in bikegeek, since the kind of fall you had is most unlikely to result in such severe injuries, but see:

Heal well, and soon. :)
