What Did You Forget To Take?

I am starting up the commute again for the year. I have a 12.5 mile one way trip. I am riding a new bike with panniers this year, instead of a crappy backpack. I was wondering what items I should have in my bag(s), and if there was anything that you wished you had taken with you, but didn't?

It's a long list of stuff I've forgotten to put in my panniers on any given ride:
The worst: work security badge/desk key; underwear. Had to return home to retrieve.
Annoying: towel. Had to drip-dry after shower and make do with paper towels. Sunglasses (I wear clear lenses at ride start). Wallet (ended up mooching all day). Shoulder strap for more comfy carrying of pannier to showers/desk.

The one thing I've forgotten to pack time and time again is a towel...and I HATE IT when I forget my towel. Luckily there are at least those nasty, brown paper towels to somewhat clean up with. Yuk.

I guess it depends what kind of job you have. I do warehouse type work and we don't have showers so I just bring my bike inside. Then head to the bathroom to change out of my jersey(it keeps me more dry and cool then riding in just t-shirt. Then quick wash my face and just head out and start working. I ride ten miles each way but to work I just keep it easy and don't try to bust a sweat riding until I leave work. Then I really give it all I got coming home. The only thing I bring with me is an extra shirt, and my lunch so it's not to hard to forget stuff. Now this winter commuting thing. It's mostly making sure I have everything I need to work on my bike...tools, tubes, patches. I have a locker at work so I leave my steel toe boots there and ride in my cycling shoes and it leaves one more thing I don't have haul along. I was using a backpack with a waterpack and probably still use it this year as I don't have racks or bags on my non winter commuter ride. I don't mind it as not big and bulky and don't get too sweat with my jersey on.

I took all the tools out of my bag rummaging for the tire tools and left everything at the house. What do you bet something happens on the ride home?

I forgot my security/access badge today.

A couple weeks ago I forgot to make sure the shoes I put in my pannier actually matched each other (and that both belonged to me and that one was not one of my wife's).

I have been travelling a lot and I am a mess right now. I hope once I get to the office today I will have everything but it's a crapshoot. I have misplaced a multitool and rainhat. Last week found myself w/ no shoes at one point. Put on spd shoes and socks whenever I needed to run out that day.

A couple times I wished i'd remembered my underwear. (wearing bike shorts in..commando during the day those days) Just a couple weeks ago, I forgot my shoes (had road bike shoes on while riding in), so I had to walk across the street to buy some new shoes.

Bring a multitool, mini pump, spare tube, and a lock. I would also bring a cell phone and wallet. After that it really depends on what you need for work.

I've forgotten my wallet but that's about it.

For me, one thing I am grateful to have at my desk is an extra bike lock. Happened to me more than once that I arrived at my job, and realized I had left mine at home.

Oh, lots of stuff.. the worst going in was underwear a couple of times, till i learned to stash a spare pair at work.

Going home I have several times forgotten wallet, also keys enough times that i got good at breaking in,, till i stashed a spare set of keys...

I really should post a checklist on the fridge door, and one on my desk...

my entire backpack - laptop, books, wallet, money, tools. just went out the door and down the hill. wasn't until 1/2 into my commute, noticing how light i was that day... thank goodness for co-workers with small loans, and company computers.

That's my set up too. It's always great to have a drawer stached with spare items.

last monday I forgot my lock, Luckily I was riding my beater mountain bike with a makeshift bright yellow fender on it so I just parked it out side of the building until class was over. I got lucky and no one stole it. The giant sheet of ice that they called a road probably helped deter any would be thief as well.

Belt and suitable work clothes. I keep my work pants/shirt in my locker at work, one day when it was -3 wind chill, I came in dressed like an eskimo: long wool underwear, thick socks, long sleeve base layer, etc. Had to spend 8 hours with all my winer clothing on under my work attire. Made for a VERY warm day.

After forgetting a towel on one occasion and underwear on another, I now keep spare pants, shirt, underwear and towel. I leave jacket, shoes, belt, comb and most work keys at work. I have a spare set of keys that get me into the building and into my office that stay in my panniers at all times.

I've ridden halfway to work a few times before realizing I forgot to don my helmet. I've forgotten underwear a few times as well.

My work provides showers and towels, so I don't have to worrry about the towel (seems a common item).
