If you try to "win" those charity rides, you're still a Fred.

Only other Freds shall be permitted to call me Fred.

All others shall call me by a politically correct term such as "utility cyclist" or "casual cyclist."

Anyone calling me a "biker" shall be duct-taped to an old Huffy and dispatched to the local motorcycle bar.

"Fred" makes me smile. Especially when I consider the context, which is usually something like "How do you keep up with us with those saddlebags?" (Answer: I'm riding twice as far as you today, and twice as far as you this year, and I rode out of my way to give you some company on my way home! By the way, nice carbon bike, how come it doesn't go faster than my 32-pound steel tourer?)

I have a rack and an old coca-cola crate fastened to it, and one day it helped me shuffle 48 cans of courage across the city. Fredding it up.

I hear the weekend wanabe roadies calling me Fred the whole time I'm leaving them in the hills....Nothings more fun than filling up all 4 panniers with newspapers then heading to the hills on the weekends to chase down some wanabe roadies. The look on their face when they can't catch you is priceless...

Any true roadie will tell you that Fred is goofy, but Fred is definitely not a poseur. We know Fred is likely to be one of the strongest riders on the MUP, flip flops, jeans, and all.
It's confusing. The other day I was fully kitted out in my lycra superhero gear, doing a training ride that ended at work, on my fixed gear with blinkies, fenders, and frame pump. I didn't know who I could look down upon so I just waved to everyone I saw....

I dunno my parents live in marsing and there is certainly some "individuals" that live there near the river so I might not add all that much salt

Don't know about there, but it happens here once in a while. There is a Dorris type girl that rides an older Raleigh touring bike that flat out slays the boy racers.

I got a chance to talk to her, one time. She HATES the rudeness of the race groups here, so when she visits she will go off the front about .75 mph faster than they want to go.
Just fast enough to break them. I asked how fast that was, she just laughed.
She was on the Olympic cycling team at one time, and her parents live here. Fun girl. Ride with you, talk, laugh, but you need to be nice to everyone out there. Or she can/and will hurt you.

Seems like it may be a whole new beast...a Frixster. Skinny jeans, Dad's Root Beer lycra cycling shirt, skateboard helmet, IP socks and Sketchers. Easily identifiable, but rare in the wild.

I really confuse them. I commute in cycling shorts and clipless pedals on a steel bike with panniers.

I guess I'm a Doris. I can think of a few times back in the 80s and 90s when I dropped road-bike riders while on my fat-tire touring bike with racks and panniers. The best was a snooty female triathlete who pushed ahead of me at an intersection while looking down her nose at me. I did my best standing start and left her in the dust. I guess the moral, for such people, is to not assume that the "Fred" or "Doris" only has the one bike. I was racing on both the road and the velodrome at the time, but since I value function over form, the touring bike was my everyday machine.

If someone calls me a Fred I will always take that as a compliment... thinking of the inestimable Fred Birchmore who was / is so much more than a world class cyclist but a world class athlete and human being.

I believe that he is now 100 years old and am not aware of any news telling of his passing... he has spent his life in Athens Georgia so any update would be nice.

Camelback = automatic Fred status. The sleeping bag definitely puts you over the top.

Even better is the sleeping bag has my tent, sleeping pad, and two days of clothes rolled up in it. and the front panniers have 4L worth of camel back bladders in them, it was really hot out that weekend.

Sounds like me (well the clips are going on next week or so, right now it's resin mountain cages) on a converted rigid steel mountain bike with drops and fenders. Folding baskets for groceries and a rear rack are also going on next week. But I do like tights in cooler weather and bibs when it's warm.
