Rain Gear

What does everyone use for raingear? I'll be putting my new Surly LHT on the road in a couple weeks. It will have fenders to keep the gunk off the driveline and me. With the bike protected, I'm wonder what works well for the rider that is breathable. Right now I have a windbreaker and leg/arm warmers. However I suspect that I'll see some rain days in the future.

Riding in 50-60 degree weather in the rain in January/February without proper gear will probably suck. I know, socal riding weather can be rough.

I have yet to find a breathable and waterproof raingear. I have tried Drymaxx (a goretex-imitation), which is supposedly good, but it does not breathe enough in warmer temperatures. Friends with Goretex gear have same complaints. So, in warm rain I simply get wet, in colder weather I wear Drymaxx. If you buy a special rain suit, make sure the jacket has enough (= as much as possible) ventilation, zippers in the armpits etc.

I generally use waterproof Patagonia Supershell jacket (with Goretex) when raining hard. Itīs made for trekking purposes but usually works for cycling, too. Still, it is not especially breathable. And sometimes when cycling its sleeves leak mysteriously, which it doesnīt make when walking. Water finds its ways through armpit zippers, I think. They are in different position when cycling a bike than standing or walking.

I use my skin. It goes with me everwhere is waterpoof and breatheable. I just can't sell it back to the store.

Pretty much the same here in late spring, summer & early fall.
I picked up my first funky waterproof "breathable" jacket after a few years of looking (I'm cheap when it comes to clothing & it STILL set me back Cdn$100) & it certainly does not "breathe". Good for cold weather (near freezing) with most of the zippers up when stating off & most are down when nice & toasty warm.
