Heh, he means it's 23 miles by car, the shortcut he takes probably cuts that down in half.

Well, I know the route. Have ridden through Chatfield and the PRT and on Dartmouth many times, and it is completely duplicatable by car - the road is the trail or goes next to the trail for almost the entire distance.

So, I think something is wrong with the figures in the article, IMHO.

That article is disappointing. Of course the guy (a nice guy BTW, I've talked to him at BV) who manages a bike shop will ride to work, as will an artist who makes little money and lives downtown. Seems like the article would do greater service if it featured stories about everyday schmoes that ride to their office buildings to work. Not to mention the fact that the paper could have shown maps of the bike paths as a means of showing people that it really is possible to get around the city quite efficiently and enjoyably on two wheels. Oh well, the author probably put the finishing touches on his article, got in his SUV and drove home by way of 7-11 for some cigs. At least it shows some of the virtues of commuting.

I've got a sister in Denver and from what she tells me downtown Denver (LoDo) has become quite trendy the past few years. If that's the case how can an "aspiring artist" making $30k a year afford a "downtown loft"?

For those prices maybe I should move to Denver, been pondering getting outta SoCal for quite a while (Though it seems Coloradoans, hate CA transplants. Do I get a pass 'cause I grew up there?).

I agree with almost everything in the article and support bicycle commuting enthusiastically. The only positive thing I would add from my own experience is that one doesn't necessarily have to live in a "bicycle friendly" city, complete with plenty of paved bicycle pathways, to make bicycle commuting a highly rewarding experience. I ride 30 miles round trip almost entirely on normal streets. Sometimes, I think we can unintentionally discourage people from considering bicycling as a realistic alternative to driving by overemphasizing the need for bicycle-specific transportation infrastructure. But that said, the article was primarily about the benefits of bike commuting, and I agreed heartily with all of those points.

All in all, I give the article an enthusiastic, "thumbs up!" (Thanks, Mr. Fox)

I enjoyed the article simply because it portrays bicycles and bicycle commuting in a positive way. As a cyclist, it seemed a little dumb to interview a guy who manages a bicycle shop about commuting to work by bicycle. That should be a given.

By the way, why does it matter that the author may have climbed in their SUV and smoked a cig after riding the article? Just a thought. Seems a little judgemental to me.

DnvrFox - I did several TDYs out to Lowry to some schools in the early 80's timeframe, plus was stationed there not quite a year in '70 and supplemented the meager AF pay with a part time pizza delivery job from a Pizza Hut store on Colorado Blvd (6th or 8th Ave, can't remember which). So, with that background, I thought I knew the area pretty well. But, I guess I don't as I haven't the faintest idea where and what is T-Rex? Just curious.

T-Rex is our attempt to make I-25 usable again, after years of getting more and more gridlock - widening to 5 lanes (from 3) from about 6th avenue south to the intersection of C-470 (south in Douglas County), along with a new branch along I-25 south to past C-470 of the light rail line, which now goes from a bit north of downtown to Mineral and Santa Fe. There is currently a ballot issue, to be decided Nov 2 called FasTracks, which will added about 100 miles to the light rail system all over the city, including out to DIA. It appears likely to pass.
