Discounts on Ortlieb bags?
 

I'm interested in purchasing an Ortlieb waterproof backpack (the courier classic model), but have found it for sale only at REI.com for $125, ten bucks over Ortlieb's MSRP of $115...Ouch!

Anyone know of a better deal out there?

A thing to consider with those monstrosities is that when riding; you can not see behind yourself whatsoever. They stick way up above your shoulders.

My experience with Orltieb has been not so great, do a search on the touring forum for other people's input.

I love this bag. It's perfect for my commute, and I have room to get some groceries or whatever other shopping I may do.

I have the X-Press, and yeah, it's not the most confortable or visibility-firendly pack. But it is hellish tough and stoopid waterproof, for which I love it. If it ever falls apart, though, I probably wouldn't buy another one - I'd go for a Timbuk2 or a Chrome.

Every now and then, I've seen some Ortlieb panniers at SierraTradingPost although it seems rare.

Hmm, that's a factor I hadn't considered....I thought the top part of the bag could roll down. So you're saying that it still blocks your rear visibility even if the bag's not full? I'm not planning on having to ride with it filled all the way very much.

I looked at one of these at my local bike shop - the top rolls shut, but only a small distance. There's no way to roll the bag way down, even if it's not near full.

This bag, however, does not appear to be waterproof, which is a big part of the Ortlieb's appeal. Are there any other waterproof backpacks out there?

I just use Arkel panniers with raincovers. Their quality is outstanding.

It has a compartment with a rain cover in the bottom which I use whenever it rains. keeps my pack nice and dry. After about 300-500 miles of commuting with this pack I am very satisfied with it.

Does the rain cover come with the pack? The rain cover's not mentioned on the ebags web page.
