Conversation this morning:
Lexus driver shouting thru passenger window: You didn't stop at that last stop sign.
Me: You didn't either. LD: Yeah, I did! Me: Nope, I watched. You slowed, but never stopped. I chose not to pretend-stop, is all. (Stop light turns green) LD (pulling away): You need to get off the street!! Me: So does your mom. (I know he heard me because he slammed on his brakes, nearly stopped, and then drove off, while giving me the finger.) |
I love it when that happens because we don't have to stop at stop signs on bikes in Boise.

I don't get the mentality that a bike needs to get off the street if they roll through a red light where there are no cars in sight. What about the guy in the car I saw yesterday plow through the intersection after the light turned red barely missing another car. People may call them a jerk and get annoyed, but no one seems to think they should "get off the road".
Its hard to resist, but it really is better to just ignore the jerks. That made me laugh though :lol: |

I really enjoy it when cars give me grief about not stopping at stop signs because I can't remember the last car I saw that actually stopped at a stop sign. |

Quality insults aside, I would have simply asked him, "and how does this affect your day?"
It's one thing to assert your space on the road. It's entirely another when you have some nanny driver call you out for a stop sign. |

Here is an excerpt from the Idaho Bicycling Laws: 49-720. STOPPING — TURN AND STOP SIGNALS. (1) A person operating a bicycle or human-powered vehicle approaching a stop sign shall slow down and, if required for safety, stop before entering the intersection. After slowing to a reasonable speed or stopping, the person shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle in the intersection or approaching on another highway so closely as to constitute an immediate hazard during the time the person is moving across or within the intersection or junction of highways, except that a person after slowing to a reasonable speed and yielding the right-of-way if required, may cautiously make a turn or proceed through the intersection without stopping. (2) A person operating a bicycle or human-powered vehicle approaching a steady red traffic control light shall stop before entering the intersection and shall yield to all other traffic. Once the person has yielded, he may proceed through the steady red light with caution. Provided however, that a person after slowing to a reasonable speed and yielding the right-of-way if required, may cautiously make a right-hand turn. A left-hand turn onto a one-way highway may be made on a red light after stopping and yielding to other traffic. (3) A person riding a bicycle shall comply with the provisions of section 49-643, Idaho Code. (4) A signal of intention to turn right or left shall be given during not less than the last one hundred (100) feet traveled |
While I think the comeback is funny truman, I do think you should have just ignored him or at least not insult his mother. Unfortunately you may encounter this motorist again and the situation could escalate quickly. The motorist can ram you from behind and use the excuse "I didn't see him" to escape any charges. Although i am not familiar with Texas, I know some place ain't so friendly to cyclist.

I try to wipe the smug grin off of my face as I see the same group of cars at every light along a major avenue on my route home. The light turns green, they race off, and I once again roll up to the next light as they sit. However, it is truly hard to beat what you describe - passing cars stuck in gridlock. That just feels great!!!!! |
There was an advert in the UK for garmin or some other GPS system which said "You aren't stuck in traffic....you ARE traffic", brilliant slogan although I thought it was much better suited to a bicycle advert.

I was yelled at for the first time ever a few month ago while commuting. Lady drove by and yelled "use the sidewalk!" ... i didnt even try to respond since she drove by me pretty fast. |
