A glass of orange juice and either toast with peanut butter or a granola bar at 6:30, before I ride to work at around 7:00. After I arrive (around 7:45), I eat a banana or another granola bar and drink some Gatorade. Then another snack at about 10:00, then lunch at 11:30. If I'm running that day, I run @ 11:30, then eat lunch afterward.

I drink my cup of coffee, and eat a bowl of high fiber cereals that I mix a banana and omega 3 milk. I find this breakfast to be light, and it doesn't make me fell bloathed for the ride.

I wake up at 6:15 am, stretch (yes I do), take a shower, makes me a milkshake of protein, banana, peaches and soy milk, perhaps Koshi cereal if I feel for it with it, then change, get my panniers ready (lunch & breakfast sandwich included), do a quick check of the bike, and I'm out the door by 7:15-20 am.
At work I get coffee (free) and eat my sanwich with it.

I get up at seven, have a slimfast shake -- not to diet, but because they're quick and haven't killed me yet -- try to drink some water, get on the road by 7:30, get to the bike station by 8, 8:15. Shower, dress, get to work by 9 (15.ish.) At work I usually grab a bagel or some oatmeal, and drink more water. Since I started commuting on the bike, I find I can't go more than a couple of hours without eating something. Not necessarily something healthy, mind you...

I'm up at 5:00 and riding down the road by 5:30, usually with a banana. That does me well for my 1:15 ride to work and usually gets me by until lunch.

carob is what you eat if you are allergic to chocolate. after you have had no chocolate for 6 months, it tastes pretty good.

I ate oatmeal this morning, but mine is quicker than most, I learned to eat it cold (just old fashioned oats, brown sugar and room temp. water), and it tastes just fine that way.

I thought carob was a typo for "carb"...

Up at 5:00, start the coffee, walk the dog one mile, drink a glass of water and a glass of orange juice, a few cups of coffee and an apple (which I eat while riding the first mile). After my 45 min. commute I make coffee at work, have a bowl of oatmeal and then carrots, fruit, another cup of coffee and a granola bar round out the morning. I have a sandwich, coffee(my last bad habit) and a pint of water in the early afternoon before riding home.

It's true, with qualifications. The fact that you have an empty stomach is not critical, the reason there is greater potential for your body to convert fat into it's energy source in the morning (before breakfast) is that it's preferred source of very available energy, glycogen, is depleted.

Your body stores a certain about of glycogen in the liver and that comprises the energy source that will typically supply energy for the first 20-30 minutes of aerobic exercise. Because your body continues to consume energy overnight, but you do not provide it with any, you wake up glycogen-depleted.

It's not all good news though. The body will break down muscle fiber aswell as fat in order to supply it's energy needs. There is good reason for this, which is basically that your body does not *want* muscle. Muscle is a liability to your body, as it increases it's calorific needs, making survival more difficult, and the body wants nothing more than survival. Of course today, supplying your body with calories is not difficult, but we have spent 499,800 years with periods of famine and only a couple of hundred with continuous plenty, so your body isn't quite convinced it should make any changes to it's tried and tested system just yet

Having said that, make sure to provide adequate nutrition and rest post-exercise and your body will reciprocate by repairing and even reinforcing the muscle fibers you stimulated, and damaged, earlier. After all, it needs to be able to survive the next attack.

As a bodybuilder, I would always choose to do my aerobic work first thing in the morning, because the only other way you can begin to access fat stores for energy is by exercising for a significant time first.

Last thing to mention is that the more aerobically fit you are, the more efficiently your body will be able to process fat for energy.

I agree! I eat oatmeal every morning, and if I've got a sweet tooth I just load it up with sugar.

[EDIT] D'oh! I meant to quote the guy saying he ate oatmeal. Oh well. OATMEAL![/EDIT]

What do you guys usually have for breakfast? It's not like I can load up on carbs 2 hours before and mash it out on my ride.

Get some Quick Quaker Oats, the one that cooks in 1 minute.

I cook it stovetop:

8 ounces of water
8 ounces of milk
1 measured cup of oats

Boil the milk & water together (add sugar or salt or raisins or whatever you flavor it with)

When milk & water boil, add Oats, stir for 30 seconds

You ready to eat a hearty and satisfying whole grain hot breakfast.

It takes 20 minutes tops to cook/eat/clean-up

It's awesome

Cold cereal does not count as a Meal!!!

It's on par as cold pizza.

4 eggs in a bowl
stir until the yolks are mixed in
add cheese, salsa, tuna , whatever.
Put in Microwave
Nuke 1 minute per egg
Remove from microwave and eat
Extremely good whenever barely functioning.
