Dear boss, sorry I could not come to work today. I'm home sick, and while it's true I probably could have driven my car (and not biked to work), I simply couldn't bring myself to do it. I've got an excellent streak going and I don't want to ruin it. Know you'll understand. I will be in tomorrow, because I'll be watching clips of Lance climb Mount Ventoux all day and that usually cures me of anything.

Hey, if you're too sick to cycle to work, you're too sick to be at work anyway.

Dear Boss:
I am not coming in to work today, because my knee hurts. I can't bike myself there, and I certainly can't sit in your junk office chairs all day with no room under my desk to stretch my leg out. I don't get paid enough to justify paying for a train pass, so I am sure you understand.
xoxo
Dauphine.

Are you also a newbie at working for a living?

Actually, in all seriousness, my boss is one of those dudes who sleeps 4 hours a night, and has probably completed a half-century in the amount of time it takes me to hit my snooze button 5 times, wake up, make coffee, and bike to work. But he does not bike commute. I tried to bond with him over bikeishness, but he's all into fancypants bikes that cost more than I earn in a year anyway.

What would the world look like if we all biked to work on the same day? Back roads packed with all flavors of bikes. Massive pelotons on the expressways. Folks nursing hangovers could draft. And everyone would make fun of the one dude wrapped around a tree 'cause he was trying to text and bike. Would anything happen to the price of gas? Some economics wiz needs to join heads with a math guy to figure that out. I'm guessing with reasonable certainty that we'd all see a meteoric drop in pump prices. We'd all get power hungry and would extend our national bike day to a week, to a month, to a year, until we all get the price of gas to mere pennies. But it would still be cheaper to bike.
