It's free online, so if you haven't looked at it, you should.

If I have a friend who's interested in bicycling I point them to this magazine. It's a bit heavy on fashion for my tastes, but they concentrate on practical commuting (they recently added a section dealing specifically with kids) the biking scene in individual cities. When they do throw in a touring or racing article it's about having fun with the activity and not using the latest greatest products.

I like Bicycle Times Magazine, as well. I've subscribed since stumbling upon issue #2 at Chapters, while sifting through the rack of magazines that seemed to cater to the racing elite, be it road or MTB. In a happy coincidence, I noticed a copy of issue #1 in the read-only rack at my LBS, and the shop owner let me keep it, so I have all of the issues now.

Since subscribing one issue never showed up, and one came late, but emails got my replacement issues sent quickly (ironically, the late issue arrived a week after the replacement one). That being said, I blame Canada Post more than I do the magazine. I hope the mail sorter who stole my magazine gets a flat tire on the way home. Personally I enjoy the publication enough that I opted for the 3-year renewal. I'll leave the critiquing to the experts.

I have to agree that of the U.S. magazines Bicycle Times and Momentum are the best available. I can also recomend two British Magazines. Velovision and A to B.

Coming from a journalism background, there just isn't enough of a market for that kind of magazine (commuting/casual touring) to exist right now. Bicycling exists because fishing monthly also exists. There is generally at least one magazine per hobby as long as the industry is large enough to publish it. That is, there are enough big players to pay the advertising bills that really make the magazine happen. I think the other suggestions for magazines are great so far, but I also think you'll have your best bet just browsing different blogs. Blogs have free range for the most part and aren't required to hold any punches.

Perhaps later on down the road, if bicycle commuting continues on it's upward trend, there may be a market for a good magazine. But odds are, most people will hate it anyways.
