Padded underwear or shorts...do they warp on repeated washing?

I have never worn padded bike shorts or padded underwear because my current bike is a crank forward, but may get a more conventional commuting bike next. It's embarrassing to ask, but:

1. How often do you wash padded underwear/shorts? I'll most probably wash after wearing once. And if so,
2. Does the padding eventually warp or get bent out of shape by repeated washings?
3. Are there other, less expensive padded underwear besides Novara women's padded undies sold at REI? I'm planning on wearing jeans on top.
4. And this is the most embarrassing. No undies under padded shorts, right? (squirm)

1. I normally wash mine after every ride, unless I'm on a two-day ride.
2. I've not noticed any change in shape of the pad after many washings.
3. I'm a guy, and I don't dwell on women's clothing, sorry.
4. No undies. The idea is that the pad IS the undies. You're supposed to be avoiding clothing in that area that might have seams, or be prone to bunching up, etc.

1. I've got several pairs, so I wash all mine at the end of the week.
2. If this happens you've purchased really cheap shorts. None of mine do this and I've got a few pairs of Performance/Nashbar cheapies.
3.
4. Depends...

I been washing my Pearl Izumis for ,???? Oh 5 years or so,,,I snagged one pair in my MTB days but other than that,, no signs of change.

I should add, I wash em in cold and hang em to dry, I can't ride more than 3 miles without em.
They got this anti fungal stufff in the chamois, so ya gotta read the wash instructions and all

I tend to wear tri-shorts and other lightly padded shorts/tights. The oldest pair I have is from the mid-90's (believe it or not) but I rarely wore them until a few years ago. Swimming in a chlorinated pool eventually destroyed a couple of pairs of tri-shorts but I never noticed a change in the pad.

Spandex doesn't like chlorine and it doesn't like heat so air drying is best. And yes, no undies.

I have to say I'm pretty impressed by the durability of cycling shorts overall.

Yes, the pad ages. The speed depends on the brand/quality.

There is a significant quality different among shorts. I'm not necessarily saying buy the most expensive thing, but low price shouldn't be your primary consideration.

Thanks for all the replies. I just wanted to make sure what to expect with the padded shorts. And that I'm using them the way they are inted to be used.
