That looks like a very nice frame. But is your commute along singletrack ? Gear ratio looks way too low for riding in traffic.

The stock gearing is 32x18. I can ride on the flats/trails @ 14 mph without spinning like crazy. Or push it @ 25 if need be. I can also climb like a goat whether it be on or off road.

29+ lbs for a singlespeed!? That frame must me made of pig iron! My geared FS mtb weighs less than that!

Hard to tell from the pics, are you using a travel agent to get the correct cable pull with your road lever / v-brake set-up?

It's a 2010 Dawes Dead Eye I bought in Jan. '10. I never ran it with the stock flat bars. I had the intention of converting it when I ordered it. The stock chain tug doubles as a derailleur hanger. :thumb:

Build List:
cro-moly frame/fork w/ disc tabs f/r
Sette stem/seat post
FSA Omega Compact bars
Cane Creek Drop V levers
Jagwire cables/housing (not stock)
Tektro v brakes (stock)
WTB saddle (not mine)
32x18 w/ KMC chain (stock)
Gravity Maximus cranks (free ride/dh durability) (stock)
Demolition (plastic) pedals (cheaper/lighter than alloy)
Alex Rims/Deore hubs/DT Swiss spokes (handbuilt from BWW)
WTB Nano (wire bead) tires and tubes (stock)

So all that equals to 29.6 lbs. I'm only 150 lbs., so I can run low pressure. It may be heavy, but it's a smooth ride on/off road. I had just removed a Sette suspension seat post too. By no means was it cheap. You can adjust the rebound and lock it out.

It's a big, heavy one-geared bike. But I love the challenge and discipline. Someday I plan on racing it as a mtb/cyclocross bike. With some changes of course. :)

Beat me to it.

Of course, I have a similar build that weighs just a bit more. But it also has an 8 speed drivetrain with a double, Avid BB7 road disc brakes, and a Reba fork. And fenders. Same big Nano tires that the OP is using. It was built for snow and other ugliness.

I bought the bike complete. I then converted it by installing drops, etc. I then replaced the stock wheels after they crapped out. It is a heavy bike. But I'm used to it. Plus, it makes me a stronger rider.

I used to have a Nashbar Mini Rack that I used sometimes. Most of the time I just use a backpack. I can always get OMM racks and mount them via skewers/brake bosses. :)
