Commuting with a heavy front load

I am thinking of getting a platform porteur rack for my Cross Check but am worried it will be a boon to the handling. I've been reading how they are "supposed" to be paird with low trail forks. Anyone using a porteur rack with a more racing type fork?

I'm not an expert on bike geometry, but if you're on a quest, changing the fork wouldn't be out of the question. Can you clarify what you mean by "boon to the handling"?
You will probably find some useful expertise if you post your question on the C&V forum.
