Bizzaro Earth Day

I have failed you all.

After faithfully commuting to school pretty much every day, and even riding in a driving mist yesterday morning, I wimped out and took the motorcycle for a few errands today. Then I saw a newspaper bit about earth day and felt silly.

What are the truly faithful commuters doing for earth day?

Didn't know that it was earth day, thanks for the heads up. I'm not a huge commuter though either as this was my first week. I did ride everyday though, which I didn't want to do by Thursday. Hoping next week will be easier. Today was a good day at work though because we had our family day picnic at the beach. Tonight though I am breaking out the car for my buddies birthday, going to be his dd so he can have as good a time as he wants.

Hey, welcome to the commuting insanity, John. I found that in the beginning it took some diligence and purpose (not wanting to ride near the end of the week), but give it a month or so and it's nearly second nature and feels weird when you jump in a car/hop on a motorcycle to go to work. How far is your ride?

I walked to the office today. Not because of Earth Day, though, I just like to walk instead of ride sometimes. (3 miles one way) I didn't realize it was Earth Day until the nice lady at Starbucks this morning told me my coffee was free because I brought my own travel mug. (and I NEVER stop at Starbucks for coffee on the way to work, so imagine my delight :) )

For Earth Day (but really just because the weather is great today), in addition to riding to work, I took an extended lunch break and rode a 25 mile loop along some rural roads near the office.

My daughter's teacher also had a Bizzaro Earth Day. She bikes to school nearly every day, but today she had to drive. I think if you're a regular bike commuter, you can pretty honestly say that you don't need a special day once a year to love the earth.

I didn't know it was Earth Day either. I took the day off from work (nice sunny day for a change) and thinned some trees in my woods. Yeah, I cut trees down on Earth Day. They are the damaged or dying trees, and I make firewood from them. My commute was pulling my little cart up the hill with my saw, water, axes, and stuff.

I did have to replace a bolt that retains my rack and rear fender on my bike. That's what was making that rattly sound....

Ironically, I drove so I can pick up my electric mower at the shop.

off work today and raining so it was a lazy one for me but I did notice that my next door neighbor drove his wife's honda 100ft to the mail box instead of his Ford Excreetion. He gave me a quizical look when I applauded his amazing effort.

I rode to work, as I always do. After work, my wife and I rode less than a half mile away to go out for dinner.

My 19-year old daughter rode her bike in a thunderstorm to get to work (her first day at the new job).

Now my wife wants to go see a movie, but insists on driving. :(

Your daughter rode in that crap that just went through here? She gets the HTFU award for the week for sure.

Picked up groceries and had a cappuccino in a bleach-free paper cup.

I will be taking a motorcycle to a nearby Island today (a popular tourist destination). I probably could ride but it's quite warm here today. At least my 400cc motorcycle makes less emissions than my 4000cc car.

That's helpful, right? :)

Yes she did. She is learning from the best. :)

I don't know what the faithful did, I was with you. I worked on the lawn all day, I took the 12MPG F-150 to the turf supply and picked up 300lbs of lawn chemicals.
Ran every 2cycle-4cycle tool I own.
The lawn looks great anyway.

Well I did not ride my bike for earth day, but I did get my free cup of coffee from Starbucks. Oh, and there are free trees being given away at Lowe's today.

Grim 04-23-11 07:44 AM

Ahh dont feel bad even the founder of Earth day is a hypocrite.
Everybody knows Styrofoam is not biodegradable and not acceptable when composting your girlfriend!

Drove to work because of surgery.

I purchased a new bike for one, continued to recycle just as normal, and had a lovely ride home on my new bike. Nothing special because I try to do my part EVERY day!
Oh, I don't have to worry about jumping into my own personal vehicle because no one in our home owns a vehicle. We do take cabs and buses but no personal vehicle.
