I participated in the 2010 San Diego Tweed Ride. Riders wore neat, dressy, non-cycling attire. We were a large group and controlled the road. Usually during big group rides I encounter several impatient drivers who sometimes engage in hostile behavior toward the group: the usual honking, swearing, gesturing, unsafe passing, right hooks, failure to yield right of way. In this case the response from drivers was overwhelmingly positive. People smiled and waved, waited patiently for the group to pass, and refrained from aggressive displays. My suspicion is that wearing cycling specific clothing on the road is akin to waving a red cape in front of a bull.

I used to keep a Velorbis at the office for lunch runs. I was rarely "dressed", but I believe I was treated better on that bike, in business attire than I am on the lycra commute.
