There are some bike swallowing potholes out there... like those 26's for unfamiliar roads where you never know what you might run into or when you are riding at night.

They all go just as fast as you pedal them. Heck, at the sprint triathlon last year there were guys on WalMart full suspension mountain bikes coming in ahead of some of the folks on serious road and tri-bikes. Look for a decent cyclocross design.

To me this is kind of like asking "what's a great pair of waterproof boots that are still breathable?" There are likely to be trade-offs between speed and ruggedness.

I like to commute on a dropbar mountain bike, but that's me.
